Interesting Stalin quotation from the Russian version of the Stalin Works.

Russian quotation:
В 1938 году по статьям о контрреволюционных преступлениях органами НКВД было арестовано 52372 человека. При рассмотрении их дел в судебных органах осужден был 2731 человек, их них расстреляно 89 человек и 49641 человек оправдан. Такое большое количество оправдательных приговоров подтвердило, что бывший нарком НКВД Ежов арестовывал многих людей без достаточных к тому оснований. За спиной ЦК партии творил произвол,
German translation:
„im Jahre 1938 waren nach dem Paragraphen über konterrevolutionäre Verbrechen von den Organen des NKWD 52372 Personen verhaftet. Bei der Durchführung der Gerichtsverfahren wurden von den Justizorganen 2731 Personen verurteilt, davon 89 zum Tod durch Erschießung. 49641 Verhaftete und Angeklagte wurden freigesprochen. Eine so hohe Zahl von Freisprüchen hat bestätigt, dass der ehemalige Volkskommissar des Inneren (des NKWD) Genosse Jeschow viele Menschen ohne hinreichende Gründe verhaften ließ. Hinter dem Rücken des ZK gab es Willkür. (SW 15, Seite 32, russ.).
English translation:
„In 1938 52372 people were arrested by organs of the NKVD according to the paragraph about counterrevolutionary crimes. At the time of the judicial proceedings 2731 people were adjudged, 89 of them to death. 49641 arrested and accused were freed. Such a huge number of verdicts of not guilty has proved, that the former peoples commissar for internal affairs (NKVD) comrade Yezhov arrested many people without sufficient reasons. Behind the back of the CC there was arbitrariness. (SW 15, page 32, Russian).
So does this quotation of Stalin explain the whole story of the purges?
Of course not. But it is an important part of that.
Ah okay, the anticommunist skunks will say: ha this is not true. It is Stalinist propaganda.
This reminds me of some conversations with some Creationists. Creationists would debate like this:
Creationist: Evolution must be wrong. There exist no transitional forms! The fossils say there is no evolution!
Me: sorry my friend, there are many fossils known which prove evolution and transitional forms. See for example the evolution of horses.
Creationist: pah, rubbish. Those are no transitional forms. The evolutionists say that the fossil horses may be the ancestors of our horses, but they do not know, because they order the phylogenetic tree of the horses with voluntary to fake their propagandistic view.
Me: no you are not right. Phylogeny and systematics do not work that way. Their evidence is based on anatomy, genetics, geography etc.
Creationist: pah everything evolutionist propaganda. I dont want to talk with evolutionist, because they deny the facts that evolution is wrong. They are dogmatic.
Well and a fanatic anticommunist would argue like this.
Anticommunist: pah this quotation is a fake. Its propaganda
Me: well prove this.
Anticommunist: I do not need to prove it. Because Stalinists are always liars and just one quotation of this murderer is no proof.
Me: So you cant prove, that this is a lie. But you are right, one quotation doesnt say everything. But there are more quotations of Stalin dealing with this topic, also with some direct examples. And there are texts of other party members like Shdanov, Molotov and co. And there are many documents concerning this topic, like the January Plenum of 1938.
Anticommunist: pah, this is all Stalinist propaganda, so its a lie and I must prove nothing.
Me: well but there are plenty historians, who are anticommunist and have access to the archives. They agree that the purges were not a systematically planed terror, where millions of people died. They proved that this was anticommunist Cold War propaganda.
Anticommunist: I must prove nothing, and I dont want to talk with Stalinist, because you are dogmatic and you cant be convinced, because you deny every facts.
Do I compare fanatic anticommunists with creationists?
Yes I do, because they are not able to discuss a topic, have prejudices, no arguments for their position and are aggressive from the moment on. They are those who are resistant to facts ;)

Shadow Stabbing #16: Quotation (2)
This is part 2 of my tutorial on quotation. The example is from Karl Weick's "The Generative Properties of Richness" (Academy of Management Journal, volume 50, number 1, 2007, p. 17). The book being quoted is Greg Dening's "Performances" (University of Chicago Press, 1996).
I'm going to continue along this road in two week's time by taking a stab at paraphrasing the long quotation that makes up the bulk of Weick's paragraph.
