Alessandro Magno (greco: Μέγας Ἀλέξανδρος, Mégas Aléxandros)[1], ufficialmente Alessandro III (greco: Ἀλέξανδρος Γ' ὁ Μακεδών, Aléxandros trìtos - III - ho Makedôn; Pella, 21 giugno 356 a.C. -- Babilonia, 10 giugno 323 a.C.) è stato un condottiero e sovrano macedone, re di Macedonia a partire dal 336 a.C.. È considerato uno dei più celebri conquistatori e strateghi del mondo antico.
È conosciuto anche come Alessandro il Grande, Alessandro il Conquistatore o Alessandro il Macedone.
In soli dodici anni il celeberrimo condottiero conquistò l'Impero Persiano, l'Egitto ed altri territori, spingendosi fino agli attuali Pakistan, Afghanistan e India settentrionale.
Le sue vittorie sul campo di battaglia, accompagnate da una diffusione universale della cultura greca e dalla sua integrazione con elementi culturali dei popoli conquistati, diedero l'avvio al periodo ellenistico della storia greca.
Il suo straordinario successo, già durante la sua vita, ma ancor più negli anni successivi alla sua morte, ispirò una tradizione letteraria nella quale egli appare come un eroe mitologico, assimilato ad Achille.
Dopo la morte, il suo impero fu suddiviso tra i generali che lo avevano accompagnato nella sua spedizione e si costituirono i regni ellenistici, tra cui quello tolemaico in Egitto, quello degli Antigonidi in Macedonia e quello dei Seleucidi in Siria, Asia Minore, e negli altri territori orientali. La vita e la figura di Alessandro Magno hanno presto assunto colorazioni mitiche. Le storie a lui riferite si ritrovano non solo nelle letterature occidentali: nel Corano, ad esempio, il misterioso Dhu al-Qarnayn (il Bicorne o letteralmente "Quello dalle due corna") viene per lo più identificato con lui. Morirà a Babilonia il 10 giugno del 323 a.C. avvelenato oppure per una recidiva della malaria che aveva contratto in precedenza.
