The stand-up legend, progenitor of all neurotic comedians that followed (and best known these days as Larry David's bald, bespectacled dad on "Curb Your Enthusiasm"), was interviewed at the Hollywood Collectors Show for the cult Manhattan cable access program Media Funhouse. Following a discussion of his improv roots at the Compass Theater troupe, we discussed the way his comedy relates to the work of Kafka (no worry--this ain't an academic discussion), and how he was the first of the "neurotic Jewish" stand-ups, years before Woody Allen. Mr. Berman veered off into a new routine--again, a mixture of sharp reality and utter anguish--about phone voicemail.
