2816 and 261 Doubleheader 2007-09-15
On a 39 degree morning, cool but calm and clear, Canadian Pacific 2816 and Milwuakee Road 261 teamed up to put on a show as they pulled an excursion train from Minneapolis, Minnesota to Lacrosse, Wisconsin on September 15, 2007. Enjoy these shots as much as I did as there were no diesel assistance needed on this train, providing for a much friendlier to the eye railfanning experience. Clips, in order as follows: Minneapolis Junction, Downtown St. Paul (along the river bluff), side by side action along Highway 61, and finally Hastings crossings.

CPR's Hudson #2816 Steam Locomotive
In May 2003 I had the good fortune of being invited on a 3 day shakedown cruise from Calgary to the Rockies and back onboard the Canadian Pacific Hudson steam locomotive #2816 in advance of a major across Canada tour for the locomotive. CPR's #2816 is a class H1b Hudson-type 4-6-4 locomotive built by Montreal Locomotive Works in December 1930. She is now called the Empress and is rated at 4,700 horsepower at 55 miles per hour. During her long working life from 1930 till 1960 on CP's mainlines between Toronto and Quebec City as well as originally East/West between Calgary, Winnipeg and Fort William (Thunder Bay) she regularly operated at speeds in excess of 70 miles per hour. During my trip I was able to spend several hours in the cab with the driver and fireman and we easily reached 60 miles per hour and could see that she had a good margin for more. After many idle years (in part at Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton) CP 2816 was towed to the BC Rail shops in North Vancouver (now part of CN Rail) in 2001 where she and saw an extensive rebuild as well as she was converted from coal to oil burning. Hudson-type locomotives were named after the Hudson River and of the total 20 built #2816 is the only one left. The BC Rail shops in North Vancouver had gained much of their steam experience caring for the younger Royal Hudson #2860 (built in 1940 as an updated modification of the original Hudson design) that ran excursions between North Vancouver and Squamish form 1974 -- 1999. The Royal Hudson is not currently operational but is now preserved in Squamish, at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park where plans are in place and donations are being sought for a complete return to live steam. The trip on the Empress took us from Calgary through Banff and Field, BC through the spiral tunnels at Rogers Pass and back. While fully capable of doing so on her own, CP did elect to have diesel assistance through the spiral tunnels to save wear and tear

Chasing Canadian Pacific 2816
In the 6th video in my "Railfanning" series, we follow a joint CN-CP excursion from Aldershot, Ontario to London, Ontario on Canadian National's Dundas Subdivision. We had cameras on the ground, in the dome car, and in the cab. The 2816 is a Hudson type steam locomotive and it preformed to perfection. An SD75i also makes an appearance. Enjoy and after the video be sure to watch a preview for an upcoming film!
