Nakon provale u laboratorij u kojemu su vršena istraživanja na primatima, skupina aktivista oslobodi i majmune koji su, po riječima prestrašenog znanstvenika, zaraženi opasnim virusom. Nisu ga slušali, a ovo se zbilo 28 dana kasnije...
Jim (Cillian Murphy) se budi iz kome u napuštenoj bolnici u Londonu. Tražeći pomoć šokiran luta praznom bolnicom te shvaća kako ni vani situacija nije znatno drugačija, sve dok na podu kapelice ne primijeti gomilu mrtvih tijela. Misleći kako je konačno nekoga pronašao, Jim se suoči sa svećenikom poludjelog pogleda, nevjerojatne brzine i krvavih očiju, od kojega ipak uspije pobjeći. Iz te ga situacije spase Selena (Naomie Harris) i Mark (Noah Huntley), koji ga odvedu na sigurno i objasne mu što se sve zbilo dok je on bio u komi. Pojavila se opasna infekcija koja se prenosi krvlju i cijela je Britanija preplavljena zaraženim zombijima. Njih se troje ipak usuđuju krenuti u potragu za Jimovim roditeljima..
