Debian Gnome + Beryl "3D-Desktop"
Debian GNU/Linux with Gnome Desktop running Beryl/AIGLX for 3D desktop effects. Debian version was "etch" ("testing" at that time). System: AMD64 3500+, 1024 DDR2-400, Geforce 6600GT (but it runs on very old machines, try it out) You can get all themes, styles, icons etc. on gnome-look dot org. The dockbar at the top is part of "gDesklets" (available on official repositories). On gnome-look dot org, search for... "dragon" (wallpaper) "glassy" (icon set) "dark" (color theme, I don't remeber the exact name) You can install everything with the default gnome theme manager. There are a lot of users posting "this is ubuntu" - it's not! The menu icon was part of the default ubuntu icon set I installed before (the new "glassy" icon set does not replace the menu button).

Compiz-Quinn(now Compiz-Fusion)for linux. The future is now!
Click 'MORE' Please n Read... This is Xgl/Compiz(now known as Beryl Project) running on my secondary comp which is a 4 year old dell with 2.4 ghz P4 proc, Nvidia 6600 GT gfx card, and only 512 megs of RAM. The music is Sidology Ep 2: Trinity, By Machinae Supremacy. This Linux install was SuSE 10.1 and I now use Sabayon Linux. Which you can get here: http://www.sabayonlinux.org Three versions include Mini CD install, Full x86 32bit install and Full x86 64bit install DVDs! The theme is a custom theme; which unfortunately I lost when my main hardrive died on me. :( However, you can get the wallpaper I used from my box.net account here: http://www.box.net/shared/static/ssvcn7tvei.jpg A few other cool backgrounds here: http://www.box.net/shared/static/vbnerbj5hg.jpg http://www.box.net/shared/static/vfqjgf3kjt.jpg The original backgrounds I downloaded from www.caedes.net; a great site which has many many more awesome backgrounds. The cubecaps are from art.gnome.org. Go here for 'Powered by Free Software' cubecap (this one was downscaled from the original using gimp to 1280x1024 to work with my res) http://art.gnome.org/backgrounds/other/1547 and here for 'Linux - Rided The Wave' cubecap. http://art.gnome.org/backgrounds/other/1131 The skydome can be found here. It, along with several of the others below, I made myself by splicing a mirrored version of the original and modifying it slightly so the two sides don't appear as perfect replicas of each other. http://www.box.net/shared/static/to24pcuin6.png A couple other cool skydomes: http://www.box.net/shared/static/tgm7tm86mv.png http://www.box.net/shared/static/c99jly0x9y.png http://www.box.net/shared/static/b1z7uxe8ze.png enjoy :D

Another Beryl 0.1.3 Video
Magic Fire, Transparency, Wobbly Windows, 3D Cube, Transparent Cube, Skydome, 3D Windows and stuff like it... All the stuff that Windows could do on a supercomputer but this time free and for every (aprox 2years old 3D) graphiccard :D There is a lot more than eyecandy you can do using linux, after a while you will get the clue behind opensource and stuff but this is what you need do persuade some people so they know linux is far more than a server-OS. Linux is ready for you Desktop! Due to comments a short Machine outline: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200 GeForce 7900GT 256MB 2GB DDR-Dual-Channel RAM 250GB SATA HDD 1680x1050 32bit Operating system is Ubuntu Edgy Eft, Window Manager is Beryl 0.1.3 and NVIDIA beta driver as current in Dec 2006. System usage during work using beryl and the effects shown: aprox 10-15% The rest is used by the video recording process... Only got 8fps because capturing 1680x1050 images is not that easy I guess :( !!!: Of course this is mostly Eyecandy, I agree. :!!! And the wobbly windows make me sick ever 10-20min of using them, but it is still nice to show friends what you CAN do with Linux, and not must do. My brother is using beryl on a cheap ATI Readeon he bought for 11€ at eBay in summer 2006, works nearly as perfect besides he is using 1024x768... But Beryl is not that useless, the transparent desktop helps you to find the Windows you lost *g* I normally switch to Beryl when stuck in work or whatever to make up my mind a bit while watching those nice effects... And I find it more usefull than aeroglass, imho. Tried Vista on a friend's laptop without getting exited, just boored. I will stick to XP for games and use Linux for the rest! (I admit that shamely, not all games will work in linux, but gaming is not everything!) Die Vista, die! :D And for the Apple-People: Linux is still free... (I mean: You do not have to pay money!) So there is a difference between paid development and free development... And for those who know nothing about the Linux stuff: 1) Get Ubuntu + install it: http://www.ubuntu.com/products/GetUbuntu/download#currentrelease 2) Install Beryl (and you graphic drivers): http://wiki.beryl-project.org/index.php/Install/Ubuntu#Ubuntu_6.10_.28Edgy_Eft.29 3) Enjoy freaking power of opensource. Not only those fancy 3D stuff...
