The Bangles - Eternal Flame (1988)
The Bangles ("Las Bangles") fue, junto a The Go-Go's uno de los primeros grupos formados exclusivamente por mujeres, a principio de los años 80s.
Las Bangles se formó en Los Angeles, California en 1981, originalmente bajo el nombre de The Supersonic Bangs, que luego se acortó a The Bangs. Sin embargo, un grupo de Nueva Jersey también llamado The Bangs amenazó con demandarlas, por lo que cambiaron su nombre a The Bangles.
La formación original constaba de:
Susanna Hoffs (guitarra, voz)
Debbi Peterson (baterÃa, voz, bajo)
Vicki Peterson (guitarra, voz, bajo)
Esta formación grabó un 45, "Getting out of Hand" b/w "Call on Me". Annette Zilinskas se convirtió en la bajista durante 1982, además de tocar armónica. Con Ziliniskas, grabaron un larga duración titulado The Bangles, en 1982. Sin embargo, Zilinskas dejó el grupo en 1983 y fue reemplazada por Michael Steele, que antes tocaba con The Runaways.
El álbum debut de The Bangles con el sello Columbia, All Over The Place (del año 1984) logró captar las raÃces pop del grupo, y captó la atención de Prince, quien escribió "Manic Monday", que llegó al #2 en Estados Unidos.
El álbum Different Light (1986) estaba mejor acabado que su predecesor, y con la ayuda del #1 "Walk like an Egyptian", la banda se estableció como un éxito en las radios FM y en MTV.
Después, alcanzaron el #2 con la versión de Simon y Garfunkel, "Hazy Shade of Winter", incluÃda en la banda sonora de la pelÃcula Less Than Zero, y en el recopilatorio "Grandes éxitos".
El álbum de 1988 titulado Everything fue otro éxito multi-platino, que incluÃa su sencillo de mayor venta, "Eternal Flame", pero las relaciones de trabajo entre las intengrantes del grupo se habÃan dañado, y el grupo se separó después de este álbum. Susanna Hoffs empezó una carrera en solitario, y Vicki Peterson salió de gira con The Go-Go's y Continental Drifters.
En el 2000, se reunieron para salir de gira, y en 2001-2002, grabaron un álbum nuevo, Doll Revolution. Un cover de "Eternal Flame" hecho por Atomic Kitten alcanzó el #1 en Inglaterra en el 2001. Doll Revolution, con canciones como "Stealing Rosemary", "Ride the Ride", "Nickel Romeo", y el single "Something That You Said", fue lanzado al mercado a inicios del 2003. La canción Doll Revolution fue escrita por Elvis Costello. La versión japonesa del disco presenta canciones adicionales.
En mayo del 2005, The Bangles anunciaron la partida de Michael Steele. La banda no anunció planes para reemplazarla.
El grupo fue elevado al Salón de la Fama de Grupos Vocales en el 2000.
