Alfonso Daniel Rodríguez Castelao was the most important man in Galician history. As a playwright, painter, writer, actor, composer, caricaturist, congressman and doctor, his aim was to defend the poor and the oppressed and all that was related to his homeland in the times that he lived in, strongly marked by the abuse of the powerful and by the Spanish Civil War.
My mother Concha tells about how Castelao would ride on his horse to the villages in times of hunger and poverty to cure the sick for free.
He was born in Rianxo in 1886 and he passed away in Buenos Aires in 1950. Castelao was buried in Argentina, where he had to go as a political exile, but now he is at the Santo Domingos de Bonaval Pantheon of Illustrious Galicians in Santiago de Compostela, less than ten steps away from Galiza's most important woman ever, Rosalía de Castro.

* A fermosa cantante de Xocaloma, Dolores Plata, é para min a mellor cantante galega da historia. Ela fixo nos anos 80 un precioso disco de jazz titulado "Lúa descolorida" no que traducía con moita sensibilidade poemas de Rosalía. Non está editado en disco compacto.
