Learn English 70 - Computers
Focus: Using Computers
Language: Computer- and Internet-related terminology
KRISTEN: Jane, I want to find the weather forecast for tomorrow. What do I need to do?
JANE: First, you need to be connected to the Internet.
KRISTEN: Right. So use the mouse to click on this icon here on the desktop, right?
JANE: Yes, and then wait while the computer dials up.
KRISTEN: Why is it taking so long?
JANE: Because our modem only works at 64k. If you want a faster connection we'll have to upgrade.
KRISTEN: OK. Now I've connected, what do I do next?
JANE: Choose a search engine from your list of favorites and type in some key words.
KRISTEN: How about "weather forecast Chicago"?
JANE: That should do. Now click on 'search'.
KRISTEN: Right. Now I have a menu of different sites.
JANE: Good. Click on the link that seems most helpful.
KRISTEN: Oh, this one's good. It has a satellite map. But looks like it's going to rain.

Jackie Mason '08 Vlog 20 Computers
Please don't get me wrong. The computer is a wonderful invention. It has improved our lives greatly. But let's be honest, the reasons why people get computers, when they have no idea how to use them, is ridiculous. The computer isn't the universal panacea that some people claim. It isn't always the ultimate in convenience either. Sometimes, old technologies are still preferred, but some people don't want to admit it.

How Computers Work - Journey Into The Walk-Through Computer
[Recorded 1990] How Computers Work: A Journey Into The Walk-Through Computer is an educational video produced by The Computer Museum and hosted by David Neil of PBS's Newton's Apple. Join David Neil and his four young companions on an entertaining and illuminating trek through The Computer Museum's one-of-a-kind, two-story working model of a desktop computer.
The Computer Museum in Boston, Massachusetts was the predecessor institution to the Computer History Museum located in Mountain View, California since 1996. Sadly, the walk-through computer did not move to California with the Computer Museum's collection, but as you can see from this video, it was a very engaging exhibit.

Find out IP addresses and shut down computers from your own
This is a tutorial that tells you how to find out IP addresses from computers and servers and stuff that made the site and is used to edit it. It also explains how to shut down a computer or server from your own windows computer using an IP address. I have only tried this on XP, but I have a feeling it works on Vista. I don't know about any earlier versions but, hey, who uses anything earlier than XP anyway? If your school (if you go to school) has a web site, you can shut the computers down there, which is very fun to do, especially when you're home sick and people at school are using the computers. If you also somehow find your friend's (or boss's)IP address, you can also shut down their computer, which is great for pranks. I AM NOT LIABLE FOR ANYTHING YOU DO WITH THIS!!!!

From One John V. Atanasoff (The History of Computers)
A portrait of a Midwest math and physics professor and his long-forgotten role in computer history. In the late 1930s, years before ENIAC would be heralded as the world's first large-scale, general- purpose digital computer, the University of Iowa's John Vincent Atanasoff conceived and built the first electronic digital computer. His formidable accomplishment has gone largely unrecognized, despite a 1972 ruling by a federal judge that established Atanasoff's original contribution to the computer age. Atanasoff has been described as being equal in creative stature to Bell, Edison, Morse, Faraday, Pascal, and Marconi. 29 minutes, color.

Computer History - A British View - Part 1 of 3
A British film about computers from 1969. It is presented here as a historical look at how computers used to be in the 1960's when PC's and Macs were over 10 years away.
Shown in three parts. Sorry, but the 16mm print is rather battered!
To my surprise this clip was featured in 'The Guardian' newspaper's Technology supplement on Thursday December 6th 2007.
