Louis Bonaparte was born in 1778 in Ajaccio (Corsica) as youngest brother to Napoleon Bonaparte. He studied at the French Military academy in Chlons-sur-Marne. Like his brother he participated in the French occupation of Italy (1796-97) and Egypt (1798-99). In 1806 he was made king of Holland by his brother Napoleon. The intention of Napoleon was clear; the creation of vassal-states. At the height of his reign four of the european thrones were occupied by his family members. In 1802 at Napoleon's request, Hortense married his brother Louis Bonaparte. The couple had three sons:
•Napoléon Louis Charles Bonaparte (October 10, 1802 - May 5, 1807)
•Napoleon Louis Bonaparte (October 11, 1804 - March 17, 1831)
•Charles Louis Napoléon Bonaparte, later Napoleon III, Emperor of the French (20 April 1808- 9 January 1873)
Hortense was born in Paris, France, the daughter of Alexandre, Vicomte de Beauharnais and of his wife Josephine Tascher de la Pagerie. In 1794 her father was executed during the Reign of Terror. Two years later her mother married Napoleon Bonaparte.
In 1806 Napoleon appointed his brother Louis, King of Holland. Hortense accompanied her husband to The Hague, in spite of the fact that their marriage was an unhappy one. In 1810 Louis abdicated as King of Holland and settled in Germany; Hortense, on the other hand, returned with her sons to France
Partant pour la Syrie (Departing for Syria) is a French song the music of which was written by Hortense de Beauharnais and the text by Alexandre de Laborde in or about 1807.
The song was popular during the remainder of the First Empire, popular with Hortense in her exile, and with the bonapartists during the Bourbon Restoration. During the Second Empire Partant pour la Syrie was the unofficial national anthem, while La Marsaillaise was forbidden but for the very end. With the collapse of Napoleon III's rule the popularity of the song waned. The song was played to the emperor Napoleon III as he departed from Schloss Wilhelmshöhe to his exile in England in 1871. It remains part of the repertoire of French military music
Jacob van Campen took control of the building-project in 1648. The entire building was constructed of white stone, though the weathering of the centuries has left none of it visible. On 20 July 1655, the burgomasters and the magistrates opened the first section. The Royal Palace is famous for it's rich and imposing decorations. Renowned sculptors were brought to Amsterdam and famous painters such as Rembrandt and Ferdinand Bol contributed to the interior. The central theme, featuring in much of the decoration, was the power of Amsterdam in particular and the Dutch Republic in general. The building served as the city hall for a century and a half.
In 1806, the Batavian Republic was forced to accept Louis Napoleon as the King of Holland.
Louis Napoleon originally opted to live in The Hague, but in 1807 he decided to move to Amsterdam.
In 1808, he took possession of the city hall and conversed it to a Royal Palace with decoration in the Empire style.
