Apollo v.s. Dionysus
My extension 2 English major work, 2007.
Starring Jack and Harry.
An abridged version of my reflection statement:
'Apollo vs Dionysus' is a video drama that I wrote, directed and edited to communicate existentialist themes and ideals as reflected in the works of Friedrich Nietzsche and Fydor Dostoevsky. The title alludes to the Greek Gods Apollo and Dionysus whom I adapted as characters, based on Nietzche's depiction of them in his book 'The Birth of Tragedy'. My video serves as an attempt to re-contextualise these existentialist ideals by communicating them through a contemporary medium. Adopting French New Wave filmic techniques made it possible for me to communicate the complex ideas of existentialism through short film.
As a filmic technique, I chose to represent Apollo as my main character. The structured nature of Apollo fits well with the bland and tedious, contemporary office workplace environment that I wanted to bring to the piece. Dionysus is the "terror" and "blissful ecstasy that wells from the innermost depths of man". His dream- like appearance on screen is presented as a force which lurks within Apollo's subconscious rather than as a separate entity.
Apollo, struggles with the society in which he serves to uphold. The film is shot in black and white which draws further attention to the isolation experienced by the protagonist.
I made very deliberate music choices throughout my film to aid plot development and tone, Nietzche considered that "without music, life would be a mistake" and regards music to be a chaotic and emotive art that appeals to a man not in a rational manner but on a wilder more instinctual level. Dionysus's presence in the film is accompanied with overt musical symbolism in contrast to Apollo's bland and structured settings.
This plot is based on my understanding of Nietzsche's view of the ideal balanced 'tragedy', an extension of my knowledge studying Revenge Tragedy in the HSC Extension 1 English Course.
