Smoke Gets in Your Eyes - Irene Dunne
Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, the classic 1933 Jerome Kern song, sung by soprano Irene Dunne in the 1935 film "Roberta", an adaptation of the original Broadway play. At around the 3 minute mark, her song is interrupted, and she has a nasty breakup scene with the man she loves. She then finishes the song in tears. I edited out the argument so that the song plays out continuously. Later in the movie, the song is reprised instrumentally. I included that scene as well.

The Pecker Dunne
Pecker Dunne was born into a travelling family in Wexford c1933. Like other travellers, he used to play on a fiddle he made himself. He performed outside hurling and football matches. He also busked widely in Ireland, England and France. Resembling a Mexican bandit with his trademark beard and stocky build, he is a colourful character, as widely known around Ireland as Margaret Barry was to a previous generation. He is best known for The Miximatosis Rabbit and a version of The Black Velvet Band called The Old Morris Van. It was from him that Sweeney's Men got Sullivan's John. For the past 20 years or so he could be heard singing and playing the banjo in Killarney and at Munster Final day in Thurles. He featured in the film Trojan Eddie with Richard Harris and Stephen Rea. Nowadays he lives in County Clare. Aged 74, he was treated in a local hospital in 2007 for a throat illness. His spirit was as high as ever. Sr Carmel O'Sullivan said: "Part of his healing process is playing music and we've found that he has brought a lot of pleasure to other patients in the hospital as well. He has been playing the banjo behind his back, playing it with a biro and also with a part of a bicycle pump."

EMER DUNNE
BALCONYTV.COM 5/11/2007 PRESENTED BY TOM MILLETT Emer is a new, diverse and emerging singer/songwriter from Laois, in the Midlands of Ireland. With her music roots based in so many genres, including Irish and jazz/blues, Emer has been singing on stage since the age of five. She has won many All Ireland titles, and a special award for her performance with the John Player Tops of the Town. From the age of eleven, Emer began her travels and performed on many of the stages around Europe at International Festivals. During this time she was also given the opportunity to sing for Dutch and Spanish Television and various radio stations. At 18, with her songwriting underway, and her influences ranging from Irish music, to the powerful voices of Ella Fitzgerald, Eva Cassidy and the pop vocals of Avril Lavigne, she started to create songs with a style and sound all of her own. She embarked on a tour of the Osaka region of Japan with a song and dance troop. Singing and dancing to these large audiences for the tour was all the encouragement and persuasion she needed to develop her passion for music. Emer moved to Dublin for her college (and party) years and secured a degree in primary teaching while beginning to develop songs. Also a talented actress, she qualified as a drama teacher and won a crystal globe with the Leinster school of music and drama for her performance during her diploma course. It's an exciting few months for Emer as she has taken time out of her teaching job and she has been busy putting the finishing touches on her debut CD. Currently, Emer plays and sings a lot by herself but has been known to find the odd musician from time to time who is willing to join forces! She has shared the stage with Pierce O Donnell, Kila, Frankie Gavin and many others. And she can be spotted running with her guitar in all directions! Emer believes that every artist can bring something different and unique to the world of music and hopes you like her own style and sound. http://www.myspace.com/emerdunne Tune in again tomorrow!!!

Irene Dunne - Lovely To Look At
Music by Jerome Kern Lyrics by Dorothy Fields This is the original performance of the song, from 1935. Irene Dunne had a remarkable career, including 5 academy award nominations for best actress, Kennedy Center honoree, UN diplomat, and philanthropist. However, she said her proudest achievement was having Jerome Kern write this song for her. Dunne is the female singer most closely associated with Kern's music. Kern's favorite male singer is also in this video - he's the conductor. Another Dunne video I posted was "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" - that was the scene where she and Randolph Scott broke up. This song, later in the movie, is their reconciliation. Interesting trivia - the fur she is wearing cost 9,000 dollars in 1935 - that's over $100,000 today. During filming, she had a special bodyguard following her around - to protect the dress!
