MEGADETH VS. METALLICA(Jason Newsted vs. David Ellefson)
i know this vid sucks!coz i dont hav a bass solo from dave the 2 unforgettable bass players of the best trash metal bands of all time, metallica and megadeth...the 2 always used a pick in playing but they also use their fingers(rarely) hey guys this video is part of my metallica versus megadeth series.. jason newsted versus dave ellefson. Jason Newsted is an American bass guitarist, currently a member of Voivod and Rock Star Supernova. He is best known as a former member of the band Metallica, which he joined in 1986 following the death of Cliff Burton, and left in 2001. He currently resides in Walnut Creek, California. Newsted favors playing pickstyle instead of his fingers. In Metallica's documentary A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica he explained that while learning to play his first bass he had no amp. To make the sound audible, he played with a pick and used a very heavy downstroke that physically starts from his shoulder[2] and not his wrist (as do most other pickstyle players), which led to not only his unique tone and sound but a strength and consistency in his right-hand picking technique which leads to Jason hitting the strings at the exact same area on every single stroke.[3] However, Newsted does use his fingers on occasion and moreso since leaving Metallica, since one of the reasons for using them was to "keep up" and "get the same attack" as the guitars in the band. The videos for One, King Nothing and Nothing Else Matters show Jason using his fingers and he also plays with his fingers on the fretless acoustic bass used for Nothing Else Matters and on other parts of the A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica documentary. In addition to this, the video for the song The Memory Remains shows Jason playing fingerstyle and occasionally slapping his bass. Also, on the live DVD S&M, Jason can be seen playing fingerstyle on the song - (Minus) Human, which was written a few years before the DVD was out on the street but previously unreleased (as well as No Leaf Clover). More recently he played fingerstyle while performing some of the Supernova original songs while on Rock Star Supernova. He is also known for his deep and throaty singing style that he has jokingly referred to as Cookie Monster vocals. While in Metallica, he provided backing vocals to Hetfield and would even take entire verses from Seek & Destroy, Whiplash, and Creeping Death for himself to give Hetfield's voice a rest. In some cases, he even did lead vocals by himself. His backing vocals have been met with both respect and criticism; fans often cite this as one of the aspects of his departure from Metallica that is most missed. Newsted is also noted for his energetic stage presence. Once described by Lars as an "energy bomb-of-a-person", Newsted would frequently run on stage, and headbang, displaying his well-known 'war-face'. He has stated in interviews that during some shows he would "Fuck up his neck pretty bad" and "couldn't play for a few minutes." He has since attempted to remedy this problem by using lighter basses and Newsted occasionally headbangs to this day, years after leaving Metallica. David Ellefson (born November 12, 1964 in Jackson, Minnesota) is a bass guitar player who is best known as a former member of the thrash metal band Megadeth. He is currently a member of Ministry, Avian, Temple of Brutality, F5 and Killing Machine. Ellefson's original playing style involved using his fingers, however, as Megadeth progressed and the music became more complex, he tended to prefer playing with a pick/plectrum Ellefson was not getting some of his material played for the band, which angered him Newsted claimed that he left Metallica because of James Hetfield's controlling desire to keep everyone in Metallica and out of side projects, specifically Echobrain, which Newsted desired to release an album and tour with. (Kirk Hammett is credited with playing a guest solo on one track, "Suckerpunch.") Jason also admitted that after 15 years, he still felt that his bandmates had not accepted him as an equal to his predecessor, Cliff Burton. He also said that the band's decision to hire a psychologist was, "Really fucking lame. And weak." james hetfield dave mustaine lars ulrich kirk hammett mart friedman nick menza

Cliff Burton (Metallica) vs David Ellefson (Megadeth)
A showdown of two of the best bassists in metal. Cliff Burton: Original Metallica bassist Ron McGovney left the band in 1982 due to conflicts with the band members, primarily lead guitarist Dave Mustaine. Cliff Burton, the former Trauma bassist, was brought on to fill the vacant spot. Cliff quickly became one of the most recognizable bassists in metal. He was known for his wild bass solos and his use of effects that were normally only used on regular guitars. Cliff recorded on Metallica's first three albums: Kill 'Em All, Ride The Lightning, and Master of Puppets. Metallica grew from an underground metal band in the Bay Area to one of the biggest bands in the country. Unfortunately, Cliff would never see the full extent of Metallica's success. On September 27, 1986, Metallica's tour bus flipped over while traveling through Sweden. Burton was killed. On their next album, ...And Justice For All, Metallica dedicated the song "To Live Is To Die" to their fallen bandmate. David Ellefson: David Ellefson moved to Los Angeles from Minnesota after he finished high school in 1983. He planned on attending a music school, and eventually joining a "glam rock" band. This all changed one day, though. Ellefson was playing the bass in his apartment early one morning, when a flower pot came crashing down on his air conditioner from the apartment above. "SHUT UP!" He heard the person who threw the pot yell. It turned out that the person who threw the pot was none other than Dave Mustaine. Mustaine had been fired from Metallica for conflicts with the other band members as well as his drug and alcohol abuse. Ellefson eventually gained enough courage to go upstairs and ask Mustaine where he could buy cigarettes. Mustaine and Ellefson went down to the local liquor store to get cigarettes and beer and the two hit it off. Mustaine took Ellefson under his wing and showed him thrash metal. Ellefson was hooked and the two formed the band Megadeth. Through the many line-up changes, Mustaine and Ellefson were the two constants. Ellefson recorded on the albums Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good, Peace Sells, But Who's Buying, So Far, So Good... So What?, Rust In Peace, Countdown to Extinction, Youthanasia, Cryptic Writings, Risk, and The World Needs A Hero. Megadeth broke up after Mustaine suffered a sever nerve injury in his arm. After he recovered, Mustaine offered for Ellefson to return to the band. Ellefson refused, however, due to a legal dispute between himself and Mustaine that formed during the break-up period.
