Economic stimulus package imminent
Hello! I'm Kristin Volk with a UPI Headline Update on this Thursday, the 24 day of January 2008.
A deal to boost the lagging U.S. economy with a $150 billion stimulus package is reportedly imminent. Government officials say an announcement on the plan could come as early as this afternoon. Final details are still being negotiated, but officials say the current outlines of the package would give individuals a tax rebate check for about $800. Families could get up to $1600.
Two new polls show Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani is slipping in Florida. Florida is a state he once called crucial to his presidential chances. The former New York mayor reportedly registers 15 percent among Republican primary voters. He's tied with former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, who only has a fraction of the organization that Giuliani has in Florida. Polls indicate John McCain is at 25 percent in the state and Mitt Romney's at 23 percent.
And on the Democratic side, Barack Obama's big lead over rival Hillary Clinton has slipped slightly, but he still has the lead in South Carolina. That's according to a new poll just released two days before the state's presidential primary. The Illinois senator reportedly lost three points overnight and is now at 39 percent. Clinton stands at 24 percent. The shift apparently occurred since Monday night's angry debate between the two when they traded harsh accusations. Since then, John Edwards, who wasn't part of the argument, has climbed four points and is now at 19 percent.
People from Gaza are pouring into Egypt for a second day today. Yesterday, militants blew open the border separating Gaza and Egypt, allowing at least 400 thousand people to cross and stock up on supplies. At least 300 thousand Gazans have reportedly crossed today. Last week, Israel blocked off the territory after days of rocket attacks. That's prohibited deliveries of things like fuel and food.

KILMEADE: David Axelrod says he didnt know about this element of Ayers, Barack Obama didnt know about Ayers background when he was in his living room and getting money from him. Is that possible?
GIULIANI: Well its just as possible he didnt know what Reverend Wright was saying for 20 years , right?
KILMEADE: I see a trend.
GIULIANI: So maybe we have a pattern developing here. He didnt know what Reverend Wright was saying for 20 years when Reverend Wright was attacking the hell out of America, spewing hatred for America. He didnt know that Ayers was one of the best known Weather Underground people. When everyone in Chicago knew [] So maybe this is a guy who doesnt have the ability to observe the world, to be president of the United States. Thats called judgment, or lack there of.
DOOCY: Barack Obama actually wrote a book blurb for Bill Ayers book back in 1987 that was published in The Chicago Tribune.
GIULIANI: Not just associates, they sat on a board together and gave out millions and millions of dollars. The board was giving out millions of dollars to various housing projects, probably to ACORN.

GIULIANI: Maybe Obama should be put through the same kind of interviews that Sarah Palin has gone through.

Giuliani Gets Exposed As Fraud by Firefighters
Giuliani Bungled Preparation in Years After 1993 Attack on Trade Center.
Critical failures by former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani before, during and after the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, raise serious questions about his ability to be commander-in-chief.
In this thirteen minute documentary, fire fighters, fire officers and family members give dramatic testimony about Giuliani's leadership failures. Their dramatic stories tell how Giuliani failed to provide the FDNY with radios that worked, which led to the deaths of 121 fire fighters inside the World Trade Center's North Tower because they were unable to hear orders to evacuate.
Fire fighters also point to Giuliani's poor judgment in placing his emergency command center at 7 World Trade Center, a known terrorist target after the 1993 bombing.
This video documents the mayor's lack of respect for the fallen when he called off the recovery effort at Ground Zero on Nov. 1, 2001, after $200 million in gold bullion was recovered.
"We produced this documentary because we need to make sure our members know Giuliani's real record," said IAFF General President Harold Schaitberger.
"The UFA participated in this video to correct the myth that Rudy Giuliani has perpetrated on the American public," said Steve Cassidy, president of the Uniformed Firefighters Association of Greater New York, IAFF Local 94.
The Giuliani campaign defended the former mayor's record by issuing a release that lists items he purchased for FDNY.
"But the campaign, with its response, has neglected to address the charges of failed leadership outlined in our documentary," President Schaitberger said.
"Purchasing equipment for a fire department doesn't qualify any mayor to be president," said Jack McDonnell, president of New York City Local 854, the Uniformed Fire Officers Association.
"If that's the litmus test for president of the United States, then most mayors in this country qualify for the job. Giuliani is running on his 9/11 record, and his 9/11 record is laced with failures in preparedness and response," McDonnell said.
The IAFF has not made an endorsement in the 2008 presidential election. Local 94 supported President George W. Bush in the 2004 election, while the IAFF
and Local 854 endorsed Sen. John Kerry.
