Los habitantes de la antigua Grecia se llamaban a sà mismos helenos, y a su tierra, Grecia, la llamaban la Hélade. El territorio de la Grecia antigua coincide aproximadamente con el actual, pero para completar el mundo helénico es preciso añadir las costas egeas de Asia Menor, asà como las del sur de Italia y la isla de Sicilia.
La historia y la cultura griegas están Ãntimamente relacionadas con el paisaje. La Grecia continental es prácticamente una cadena montañosa que se hunde en el Mar Egeo, cuyas numerosas islas no son más que las cimas de esta cordillera sumergida. Este fenómeno ha dado lugar a unas lÃneas costeras muy recortadas y abruptas, con abundantes penÃnsulas y pequeñas islas próximas, además de unos valles interiores cerrados y de difÃcil acceso. Las llanuras, por el contrario, son escasas y de pequeña extensión.
El nexo de unión de estas diferentes áreas es el mar, vÃa de enlace de los diferentes territorios y factor de expansión del mundo griego. La escasez de terreno fértil obligará al griego antiguo a buscar nuevas tierras que alimenten a la población sobrante. De ahà la vocación comercial del pueblo heleno o la colonización de nuevos territorios, que caracterizarán a la Grecia antigua.
Pero el paisaje griego, con ser importante, no ayuda por sà solo a explicar el maravilloso legado cultural helénico. El racionalismo como actitud ante la vida, la consideración del hombre como medida de todas las cosas, el amor a la belleza y un elevado sentido estético o la democracia como sistema polÃtico, son valores espirituales presentes en nuestro mundo. "Opino que es justo favorecer al pueblo en general en detrimento de los nobles y los ricos, porque es el pueblo quien, al dar los hombres para la marina y el comercio, constituye la fuerza de Atenas. En consecuencia, justo es que participe de los cargos que dependen de una elección", dirá Jenofonte en el siglo IV. Estos valores, sin duda una deuda reconocible con el mundo griego, no surgen de manera repentina, sino que son el fruto de evolución de casi 3.000 años.
Durante estos tres milenios, pueblos diferentes poblaron las tierras de la Hélade. Desde el año 3000 a.C., en que finaliza el NeolÃtico, hasta el 1100 antes de nuestra Era, se desarrolla la Edad del Bronce. En esta etapa emergen sucesivamente tres grandes culturas. La primera, la Cicládica, tiene como caracterÃstica principal el desarrollo de un floreciente comercio.
Mucho más importante será la cultura minoica, cuyo núcleo es la isla de Creta. Alrededor del 1900 a.C. surgen grandiosos palacios en Cnosós y Festo, imponentes residencias reales con cientos de habitaciones, algunas de ellas bellÃsimamente decoradas con frescos vivos y coloristas. Los palacios cretenses señalan la aparición de un poder absoluto, sustentado económicamente por una intensa actividad comercial, basada en el intercambio de suntuosos objetos de artesanÃa....
