Jim Hession Performs Senor Mouse by Chick Corea
http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsession A spur of the moment improvisation suggested by Martha gave us this piano solo version of this Chick Corea standard. Jim learned this music in the 1970's after the Corea/Gary Burton collaboration on "Crystal Silence" was released. This was filmed in the Word of Mouth Studio in New Orleans. Jim is in the midst of recording four new CD's in various formats from piano solo to piano/vocal with Martha to piano/sax with Ryan Burrage to small jazz ensemble. Arrangements are currently being written for a 72 piece marching band.LOL

Jim Hession plays Jelly Roll Morton's "Fingerwrecker"
http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsession
Jim Hession performs a rendition of Jelly Roll Morton's "Fingerwrecker" that he learned at age 16 from British jazz pianist Ron Weatherburn. Recorded at Fritzel's Jazz Pub, New Orleans French Quarter during the 2007 French Quarter Festival at the request of Austrian clarinetist Wolfgang Friedrich, who heard Jim perform the tune in Disneyland's French Quarter several years ago. The club on this particular night was standing room only, filled with musicians from across the world. This is the case many times a year as lovers of America's own music, jazz, flood into New Orleans to add Bourbon St. to their jazz credentials.

This wonderful piece had been reinvented several times. Originally it was James P. Johnson that recorded the original tune...years later it was Dave McKenna that made a splash with his cut. Jim Hession was influenced by both recordings as you can hear.

Jim Hession / The Charleston /James P. Johnson /stride
http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsession
New piano CD's available as of April,2008
James P. Johnson, the father of stride piano, made history in 1923 by penning the quintessential pop tune and dance craze of the 1920's{better known as the "jazz age"}. Johnson, a student of Eubie Blake, followed Blake's 1921 "Shuffle Along" Broadway success with his own show, "Runnin' Wild". Here he utilizes the "Habenera" rhythm as the distinctive musical feature of the Charleston. This rendition leads off with a rubato treatment of the original verse. This piece was posted at the request of a YouTube viewer. Martha and I have done this as a piano/vocal feature in concerts for many years. This is a totally improvised rendition and stylistic elements of both Eubie Blake and James P. Johnson appeared as inevitable contributions to the mix. What a great addition to the stride repertoire for any two handed player!

Jim Hession / New Orleans Joys / Jelly Roll Morton
http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsession
Jim Hession plays one of the best examples of Jelly Roll Morton's "Spanish Tinge", incorporating the Habanera rhythm to alternate with the straight traditional jazz beat. Fans of New Orleans jazz piano will notice the similarity between this early Morton piece and the later styles of the post 1940's New Orleans players from Professor Longhair to Dr. John.

Jim Hession /Puttin' on the Ritz/ Irving Berlin
http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsession
One thing that Jim has always enjoyed is taking music of the great American songbook era and improvising a piano solo that could extend anywhere from 5-20 plus choruses without repeating a musical idea. This cut was selected from two back-to-back takes that were completely different. An amusing idea was added at the end of this take when the recording engineer shouted:"Puttin' On the Ritz" in classic Peter Boyle style(as the monster) from Mel Brooks' "Young Frankenstein".
