KHON2 Honolulu -- UFO's seen over South Shore sky
POSTED WITH PERMISSION FROM KHON2. Two trails of mysterious lights are seen circling in the southwest sky Friday evening. It's hard to draw a surfer's attention away from the next wave, but whatever was in the southwest sky Friday evening around 6:20 p.m. drew a crowd along Kewalo Basin and Ala Moana Beach Park. Honolulu resident Peter Hollingworth described what he and many others saw as two lights circling in the sky, about 45 degrees above the horizon. Video of one of the lights was recorded from the KHON 2 SkyCam. "These two little fireballs with a stream behind it," said Hollingworth. "Looked kind of like a shooting star but it just kept going. They changed directions a few times, at first it was coming in then it turned, then it went out then it came back in again." Hollingworth was surfing with his 12 year old son when the unexpected show began. "I was a little concerned. I told him come over and sit with me - this might be the last surf session we ever have together because this thing's coming straight for Honolulu. It looked deadly to me it was kind of spooky." So what was it? The National Weather Service says nothing showed up on their radar at the time of the sighting and the Federal Aviation Administration didn't report anything unusual. The U.S. military conducted a missile defense test off of Kauai Friday evening but the test didn't begin until 7:20 p.m. "This in a sense is an unidentified flying object," said University of Hawaii astronomy professor Gareth Wynn-Williams. "It's something in the sky that's moving that we haven't identified." Wynn-Williams believes there's a simple explanation behind the UFO's. "It's probably a contrail of some kind," he said while watching video of one of the lights at his Kailua home. The professor says contrails are caused by high flying airplanes burning hydrogen based fuels. One of the byproducts of the fuel exhaust is water. "The air is very cold so the water condenses and forms like drops very quickly and then these drops stay behind the plane until eventually they warm up and they evaporate." Wynn-Williams doubts little green men from Mars are behind the UFO's. "Some people just think differently than scientists and they like to look for the fanciest most exciting explanation. Those people would like to think it's little green men, I think that's very unlikely." According to published reports this is not the first time a UFO has grabbed the attention of Hawaii residents. In December of 2004 an unexplained streak of light was captured by a camera on Haleakala on Maui moving southwest to northeast. No official explanation has been given for that UFO sighting either.

HONOLULU (March 21) - Aloha Airlines filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Thursday, a little more than two years after emerging from bankruptcy. Aloha said it will continue to fly as long as a bankruptcy court accepts the airline's financial plan to keep operating. The airline said in its filing that it was unable to generate sufficient revenue due to what it called "predatory pricing" by Mesa Air Group Inc.'s go! airline. Aloha Airgroup Inc. emerged from bankruptcy protection in February 2006, just 14 months after filing under Chapter 11. Phoenix-based Mesa Air Group launched go! into the interisland market later in 2006 to compete with Aloha, as well as Hawaiian Airlines Inc. In January, go! reported a $20 million operating loss in its first 16 months of operations. Meanwhile, Aloha and Hawaiian reported combined losses of nearly $65 million since go! began operating. Aloha said it was forced to match go!'s below-cost fares at a time when the airline industry was facing unprecedented increases in the cost of jet fuel. "It is a travesty and a tragedy that the illegal actions of a competitor and other factors completely beyond our control have forced us to take this action," said David A. Banmiller, Aloha's president and chief executive officer. Mesa Air Group CEO Jonathan Ornstein declined comment, saying the company had not yet read the filing. In October, a U.S. bankruptcy judge ordered Mesa to pay Hawaiian Airlines $80 million for using confidential information it obtained from Hawaiian's own bankruptcy proceedings to launch go!. Mesa is appealing the ruling. Hawaiian emerged from bankruptcy in June 2005. Aloha said it will ask a bankruptcy court to approve a financing arrangement with General Motors Acceptance Corp. that will allow the privately held airline to continue operating. "Through this filing, we hope to achieve a successful outcome that will protect the jobs of 3,500 dedicated employees who have made extraordinary sacrifices for Aloha, and to continue to earn the support of our loyal customers, business partners, vendors and financial backers." Mark Dunkerley, president and CEO of Hawaiian Airlines, said Aloha's bankruptcy filing reflects the difficult operating environment in Hawaii's airline industry. "It is extremely challenging and marked by high operating costs, record high fuel prices and a very competitive pricing structure," Dunkerley said. Gov. Linda Lingle said she was concerned over the future of Aloha's employees in the wake of the airline's bankruptcy filing. "I am hopeful that this action will allow Aloha Airlines to successfully emerge from reorganization as they have done in the past," she said. "The continued, uninterrupted service of the airline is in the best interest of the employees, Hawaii residents and visitors and our state's economy." Aloha operates a fleet of 26 Boeing 737s to serve five Hawaiian airports and six mainland U.S. destinations. Hawaii
