He can still hardly walk and the mental wounds may never heal. Worse still, it appears his abuser is part of a much wider paedophile ring. In one leafy suburb a local man points out several homes used for "parties with primary school kids. They use it for selling children." Increasing poverty is fuelling the trade; hotels are forced to turn a blind eye to the sex trade to secure custom. "They need the money so it is easy for paedophiles to operate," explains nurse Gloria Goodwin. Traditionally, convicted child abusers face only a short spell in jail. But pressure is growing for the courts to take a tougher stance.

How green are biofuels made from palm oil? In Indonesia, forests are being felled to make way for palm oil plantations. Deforestation is now the world's second greatest cause of greenhouse gas.
"This is very bad", laments Greenpeace representative, Hapsoro, looking around a palm oil plantation. In this area alone, 8,000 hectors of forest have been replaced with plantations. Last year, more than a billion tones of carbon dioxide was released into the environment by forest fires, caused to clear land for plantations. Indonesia has high hopes palm oil will become the new green gold. "We want to be the number one exporter", states forestry minister Ms Ka'ban.

Many accuse local criminals of exploiting religious tension to gain power in the vacuum left by Suharto. The migration policies that forced the archipelago together are now falling apart, and the islands are left hanging together by a fine political thread.
