Irena Sendler: A Tribute
Irena Sendlerowa (de domo Krzyżanowska) was a Polish Catholic nurse who saved 2,500 Jewish children in the time of the Shoah (the Holocaust) in Nazi-occupied Poland. Irena Sendler 1910-2008, a Righteous Among the Nations, saved 2,500 children in Warsaw. Irena Sendler was a nurse at a Catholic hospital when Nazi Germany invaded Poland in 1939. As a nurse she was able to enter the ghetto. Irena Sendler was smuggling children out of the Warsaw ghetto to Polish Christian families. To preserve the identity of the saved children she wrote down their true names and hidden the list in jars. The jars with 2,500 names were buried in a garden. Irena Sendler was arrested by Nazis in 1943. She was tortured but she has revealed no names. IRENA SENDLEROWA: When I saw what's going on--I just decided to act. Irena told guards a child has typhus and needs to be taken to hospital to prevent epidemics. Sometimes she cooperated with janitors of a courthouse that stood at the ghetto's border, so children could be led by janitors through long corridors towards freedom. SHEVACH WEISS (former speaker of the Israeli Parliament): Now she went to God. And she will ask God--"God, where were you in the time of Holocaust?" And God will answer to her: "I was in your heart." "And I will give them an everlasting name" (Isaiah 56:5) Irena Sendler has died peacefully on May 12th, 2008, in Warsaw, Poland. I Bóg jej powie: "Byłem w twoim sercu". "I wyryję twe imię na wieczność" (Izajasz 56:5) Irena Sendlerowa umarła 12 maja 2008 roku w Warszawie. Sendler Irena Mother of the Holocaust Children
Irena Sendler-Polish woman who helped save the lives of 2,500 Jewish children during World War II.Mother of the Holocaust Children. ZEGOTA - Council for Aid to Jews in Occupied Poland (1942-1945). Polish citizens have the highest amount of Righteous Among The Nations awards at the Yad Vashem Museum. Poland 6,066 Righteous Among The Nations Total 22,211 Righteous Among The Nations In 2008 ULMA Family. The beatification cause, initiated in 2003 for an entire Polish family, is being moved forward by the relevant authorities in Rome. Already honoured by the title of "Righteous Among the Nations" by Israel, the Ulma family were executed by the German-Nazis on March 24, 1944, in the Markowa. Before the German-Nazis invaded Poland, Hitler announced, "The destruction of Poland is our primary task." He also commanded, "Kill without pity or mercy all men, women, and children of Polish descent or language. Only in this way can we obtain the living space we need." Hitler's head of secret police, Heinrich Himmler, promised that "all Poles will disappear from the world." POLAND'S HOLOCAUST: 6 MILLION CITIZENS DEAD (3 MILLION CHRISTIANS and 3 MILLION JEWS) Poland lost six million citizens or about one-fifth of its population: three million of the dead were Polish Christians, predominantly Catholic, and the other three million were Polish Jews. Zbigniew Brzezinski writes "Zegota is the story of extraordinary heroism...tantamount to 'Schindler's List' multiplied a hundred-fold." Sheltering or helping Jews in German-occupied Poland posed a serious danger to anyone doing it. Poland was the only country where the German-Nazis ordered a death penalty not only for the persons directly aiding them but even for the neighbors living nearby.
