菊池桃子 - もう逢えないかもしれない Kikuchi Momoko
菊池桃子 is perhaps one of my favorite idol singers of the 80s. She's had many hits during her career including including tearfully nostalgic songs like 卒業-GRADUATION- as well as dance hits like 少年は天使を殺す (with ラ・ムー RAMU). Kikuchi Momoko was among a handful of hugely popular, cute-as-a-button, Japanese Pop music idols who were tapped to extend their talents from beyond the music scene and into TV and movies (other notables were Nakayama Miho, Yakushimaru Hiroko, Matsuda Seiko, Harada Tomoyo and Saito Yuki). もう逢えないかもしれない is perhaps my favorite song of hers.
This performance is from the music program "The Best Ten" which ran on TBS (Tokyo Broadcasting System) for most of the 80s. Hosts Kuroyanagi Tetsuko, Konishi Hiroyuki, Kume Hiroshi and Matsushita Kenji counted down the weekly "top ten" J-pop hits as tabulated via phone-in requests as well as record sales. Each week they would invite those singers that placed in the top ten for live performances in front of a studio audience. It was great entertainment indeed and gave viewers a chance to see the performer sing live (albeit some lip-synched their performances).
