Kirwan Suite
Apocalyptic Epic Vision; oil paintings by Kirwan THE SCREENING The Kirwan Suite has been selected for screening at the "3D Animation & Digital Art Expo" June 9th & June 10th / 2007 at the Ninth Annual Maple Valley Arts Festival, in Maple Valley, Washington. http://www.maplevalleyarts.com/ THE PAINTING This apocalyptic epic vision was first rendered as a triptych in oils named The Journey. Each of the three panels is round. http://www.kirwanesque.com/triptych/triptich.htm The artist KIRWAN explains: The Journey is a single concept in three parts. This is a literal interpretation of some of the many Sojourns we each take through life. Part I depicts the scramble for survival, the yearning for power at the cities' edge and the game which that can become. Part II depicts civilization founded in the wealth contained in the history of man. Here a conglomerate history of our heritage is contrasted with the separateness of the future embodied in youth. Part III is the ethereal exit from routine, a search for answers to the ever elusive and personal in our lives. As we pass through the soft mirrors of our thoughts we are seen to grow to become the only true beholders of ourselves. In the world behind the image it is possible to discover the reflections that we see for what they are - the tomorrows of our lives. THE JAVA ANIMATION In 2005, Sondra London made an interactive Java animation called The Kirwan Suite. http://sondralondon.com/attract/kirwan/index.htm The Kirwan Suite comprises five Java animations of KIRWAN's oil paintings. It starts by slowly panning across the upper half of The Journey, merged into one long looping panel. Then there are the three other epic canvases visited via flying windows: Night Watch http://www.kirwanesque.com/gallery/nightwatch.htm Turning Point http://www.kirwanesque.com/gallery/turning_point.htm The Four Horsemen http://www.kirwanesque.com/gallery/4_horsemen.htm Finally, The Kirwan Suite wraps up with a slow pan across the lower half of The Journey, as before. THE VIDEO To repurpose the interactive Java animation into a digital video composition, London used Studio Quickstart, which came with Pinnacle Dazzle, a device used to convert VHS video to digital, importing the jpgs previously made for the Java animation. The package supports zoom & pan for stills, so that was used, with the same kaleidoscopic zoom transition effect between each jpg, enhancing the sensation of depth. The soundtrack for the video is more multidimensional than the original pure Shostakovich. It populates the vision, as our own footsteps take us through the phantasmagorical landscape. In the background, a priest is chanting a Rosary, a Muslim is calling to prayer, and Buddhist monks are chanting OM; supported by Haitian Voodoo drumming alternating with the syncopated barking of sea lions. These, then, are the sounds of Gaia creaking and groaning under the strain -- the cries of wolves, lions, elephants, dogs, elk and stumblebums -- emerging through the jostling city traffic. The Four Horsemen come thundering through, right when the Muslims and Christians are praying in perfect harmony; and then how does it end, after all that turmoil? With Cartman cursing en espanol over the jingle-jangle joy of a gaggle of urchins.

Jigsaw Puzzle Blues - Fleetwood Mac w/ Danny Kirwan ('68)
Some people might not realise that Fleetwood Mac was a blues band which morphed into a progressive blues rock band before they hit the big time with Stevie Nicks et al. The original band had great guitarists: not only Peter Green, but also Jeremy Spencer and Danny Kirwan. Danny Kirwan went on to have a significant role in the early evolving Fleetwood Mac: singing, playing guitar, composing and arranging. This is one of his early efforts off the 'English Rose' album. It was also the 'B' side to the single 'Albatross' (at least here in Australia). It was recorded on 6 October 1968, and is a great guitar instrumental (perhaps with some Django influence) which has been very popular with guitarists, as evidenced by the cover versions on You Tube. I have put this slide show together as a tribute to Danny, the early Fleetwood Mac, and guitarists everywhere. Comments on the video are welcome.

Danny Kirwan - World's In A Tangle
From "Fleetwood Mac In Chicago (1969)". I'm gonna build myself a cave... this line hardly makes any sense. Actually it makes no sense at all to me. As well as the rest of the lyrics of this song - 'World's in a tangle' - recorded by Danny Kirwan and Original Fleetwood Mac on their legendary January 1969 session at Chess Studios in Chicago. I didn't know who was the author of this song - J. Lane. Thanks to the YouTube user NKPman's comment I learned that James A. Lane is the birth name of Jimmy Rogers (1924 -- 1997) - a blues singer, guitarist and harmonica player, best known for his work as a member of Muddy Waters' band of the 1950s. Here you can read more about him: http://static.wikipedia.org/new/wikipedia/en/articles/j/i/m/Jimmy_Rogers_14eb.html How one can build a cave? And who are these 'reds' mentioned repeatedly? Puzzling, yes. Still, I like this blues a lot and I think Danny Kirwan (20 years old at that time!) sings it just brilliantly. The whole band sounds fine and piano played by superb Otis Spann makes it shining. Two days ago was Danny Kirwan's birthday and my intention was to make this slideshow video for that day. Unfortunately, I was too busy last couple of days so I managed to make it only today. Anyway, belated 'happy birthday' to Danny Kirwan!
