Pianist Carla Bley and Bassist Steve Swallow, musical colleagues since the early 1960s, are known for their ability to seeming breath their music synchronously. Their exquisite playing has wowed audiences around the globe, and compositions are works of clarity and quiet strength that have found their way into the repertoires of countless soloists and bands.
For three decades Bley and Swallow have been captivating audiences with their intimate stage rapport, needing neither a conductor's baton nor a constant beat to play- and apparently breathe- absolutely as one. Throughout this concert event the pair assumes the personae of ever-so-slightly eccentric friends, addressing the listener and each other with a playful wink and a nudge.
The film is features a special musical gem- the art of a unique duo. Basic elements of musical mutuality- dynamics, timing and knowing how much is enough- are refined here to a precision perhaps unsurpassed among improvisers.
