A cut-scene from the Bulgarian movie "Khan Asparuh" (aka "681 - Glory of the khan"), the full Bulgarian version. The movie was made for the 1981 jubilee "1300 years since the creation of Bulgaria". It has absolutely no computer effects, all the actors are real!

Heracleios, take the Anatolians and the Armenians! They fought shortly today. We'll await a signal from you tomorrow, showing that you're inside the fortress, so that we'll start the battle also from this side.
Heracleios: Noble one, should we trust only a few scouts? It is possible that there still might be Bulgarians hiding in the reeds.
Emperor: It is possible, but they would be a few. This wicked tribe is being born and lives on a horse. But a horse in the swamps? Do it, Heracleios! ... The strategus Evstatius should raise the guards in the rear of our camp! ... You're free to go... So?
Gregorian: Bad news, noble one. A man of mine secretly came from Constantinople. The Papal legates have arrived there three days ago. This would topple over the works of the Holy Council. That's what Patriarch Tarasius thinks.
Emperor: What? The Orthodoxy was already acknowledged by the Council as a separate Church, equal by power and glory to the Roman one!
Gregorian: It was, but not in the presence of the Papal legates.
Emperor: The separation of the Orthodox Church from Rome is a work of my life, not less historical than my victory over the Arabs! If Rome doesn't recognize our Patriarch as a Universal one, then the Council is meaningless!
Gregorian: If Rome isn't persuaded, then we'll have to find a way to persuade it.
Emperor: How?! When all of my commanders and statesmen are entrapped in a useless battle with barbarians! Some unwashed heathen is stuck in my home and is trying to play war-games with the emperor of half the world! Forward-backward, up and down! A day, three, a month maybe!
Gregorian: No month -- we'll finish here for a day or two, most probably tomorrow. I don't remember the strategus Heracleios to have ever lost in battle!

Emperor: They spoke one thing, they thought another! Is it so hard to guess that?! Now what if the Slovene sea, in which we currently are, overruns our way back, under the orders of that man? What if I have to fight for two months only to go back to my capital? Then?! What do the scouts report about Slavun?

Giovanni de Piano Carpini (circa 1180-1252),
Italian Franciscan friar, historian, and the first European to record a visit to China, born near Perugia, Italy. One of the original followers of St. Francis of Assisi, he served for several years in minor clerical offices in Germany and Spain. In 1245 he was summoned by Pope Innocent IV to establish an embassy among the Mongols, who had invaded Europe several years before. The pope hoped to dissuade the Mongols from further attack by a personal appeal and to secure information about them. Carpini led the mission from Lyon, France, to Kyiv, Ukraine, then the outpost of Christianity, and to the Mongol imperial capital, Karakorum, Mongolia. There the legates witnessed the enthronement of Kuyuk. Several months later, the legation began the arduous journey back to Lyon. The mission failed to halt the Mongol invasions but is memorable for the account set down by Carpini, Liber Tatarorum (The Book of Tatars), which describes the customs, geography, history, and leading personages of the Mongols and the country between Kyiv and Mongolia.

Pope St. Gregory III was the son of a Syrian named John. The date of his birth is not known. His reputation for learning and virtue was so great that the Romans elected him pope by acclamation, when he was accompanying the funeral procession of his predecessor, 11 February, 731. As he was not consecrated for more than a month after his election, it is presumed that he waited for the confirmation of his election by the exarch at Ravenna. In the matter of Iconoclasm, he followed the policy of his predecessor. He sent legates and letters to remonstrate with the persecuting emperor, Leo III, and held two synods in Rome (731) in which the image-breaking heresy was condemned. By way of a practical protest against the emperor's action he made it a point of paying special honour to images and relics, giving particular attention to the subject of St. Peter's. Fragments of inscriptions, to be seen in the crypts of the Vatican basilica, bear witness to this day of an oratory he built therein, and of the special prayers he ordered to be there recited.
Leo, whose sole answer to the arguments and apologies for image worship which were addressed to him from both East and West, was force, seized the papal patrimonies in Calabria and Sicily, or wherever he had any power in Italy, and transferred to the patriarch of Constantinople the ecclesiastical jurisdiction which the popes had previously exercised both there, and throughout the ancient Prefecture of Illyricum. Gregory III confirmed the decision of his predecessors as to the respective rights of the Patriarchs of Aquileia and Grado, and sent the pallium to Antoninus of Grado. In granting it also to Egbert of York, he was only following out the arrangements of St. Gregory I who had laid it down that York was to have metropolitical rights in the North of England, as Canterbury had to have them in the South. Both Tatwine and Nothelm of Canterbury received the pallium in succession from Gregory III (731 and 736). At his request Gregory III extended to St. Boniface the same support and encouragement which had been afforded him by Gregory II. "Strengthened exceedingly by the help of the affection of the Apostolic See", the saint joyfully continued his glorious work for the conversion of Germany. About 737 Boniface came to Rome for the third time to give an account of his stewardship, and to enjoy the pope's "life-giving conversation", At Gregory's order the monk and great traveller, St. Willibald, went to assist his cousin St. Boniface in his labours.
The close of Gregory's reign was troubled by the Lombards. Realizing the ambition which animated Liutprand, Gregory completed the restoration of the walls of Rome which had been begun by his predecessors, and bought back Gallese, a stronghold on the Flaminian Way, from Transamund, Duke of Spoleto, which helped to keep open the communications between Rome and Ravenna. In 739, Liutprand was again in arms. His troops ravaged the exarchate, and he himself marched south to bring to subjection his vassals, the Dukes of Spoleto and Benevento, and the Duchy of Rome. Transamund fled to Rome, and Gregory implored the aid of the great Frankish chief, Charles Martel. At length ambassadors from the viceroy (subregulus) of the Franks appeared in Rome (739). Their arrival, or the summer heats, brought a momentary peace. But in the following year, Liutprand again took the field. This time the Romans left their walls, and helped Transamund to recover Spoleto. When, however, he had recovered his duchy, he would not or could not comply with Gregory's request, and endeavour to recover for the pope "the four cities of the Roman duchy which had been lost for his sake." In the midst of all these wars and rumours of war, Gregory died, and was buried in the oratory of our Lady which he had himself built in St. Peter's. He died in 741, but whether in November or December is not certain. It is however, on 28 November that he is commemorated in the Roman martyrology.

On October 13, 1951 the Pope's Legate, Cardinal Tedeschini, was sent to Fatima for the closing of the Holy Year. He told the crowd that Pope Pius XII had himself seen, repeated in Rome, the Miracle of the Sun that had occurred at the last Fatima apparition. It is clear that the Holy Father chose Fatima for this major event, to bring attention to the Message of Our Lady of Fatima. The Holy Father had, in fact, been graced to see the Miracle of the Sun on four separate occasions the previous year: October 30 and 31, November 1 (the day Pius XII solemnly defined the dogma of the Assumption), and November 8 (the octave of the same solemnity).
This is Portugal.... Lisbon the Targus River in October 1951 when the President Salazar and the military were greeting the Vatican legates to attend the Pilgrimage to Fatima.
