Fighting the Maoists - Nepal
May 2005
King Gyanendra has been widely criticised for dismissing the government in Nepal and declaring a state of emergency. But his supporters claim he was forced to do this to fight the Maoists.
"Democracy was blamed for all the corruption and everything," laments journalist Prateek Pradhan. "Certain powerbrokers are trying to root it out from this country." While the King traditionally receives strong support, people don't trust politicians. Caught in the crossfire between the Maoists and the government, they look to the king to bring peace. Since the Maoist uprising began, more than 11,000 have been killed. The army controls the cities and major roads and the Maoists the countryside. The army claims to have the upper hand but it lacks the strength to crush them completely.

Maoists and Monarchs - Nepal
Feb 2006
Nepal is slowly spiralling into chaos. Tourism has collapsed as Maoist rebels join forces with pro-democracy activists to demand fundamental change.
"We challenge the new King", states Human Rights activist Krishna Pahadi. "We want a new Nepal with a functioning democracy, human rights and social justice." Despite already being jailed 25 times, Pahadi and his fellow protestors refuse to give up. There are pro-democracy rallies in Kathmandu every day. They call for the king to be stripped of his power. The royal palace has become a military fortress. Tourism -- once Nepal's main source of income -- has collapsed as negative headlines scare travellers away. Outside Kathmandu, the rebels are in control. "The Maoists come in the night and attack us. They're very dangerous", states 14 year old Bimala. But with the government reluctant to negotiate with rebels, Nepal's problems look set to get worse.

Maoists Chase Away Protesters in Kathmandu, Nepal
A day after signing a historic agreement with the ruling alliance in Nepal, Maoists rebels faced a protest in front of their office in Lalitpur (Kathmandu Valley). Protestors, mainly a few dozen residents of Lalitipur district, had gathered in Kupandole, near a bridge that separates Kathmandu from Lalitpur, and stopped the vehicular movement on the road that goes from the front of the office. They had a complain: rebels were forcing the residents of the city to feed their comrades who have arrived in Kathmandu from different parts of the country to take part in a Mass Rally scheduled for Friday, Nov 10, 2006. Within an hour or so, about two hundred Maoist cadres from four casinos in Kathmandu came and flushed out the protestors and resumed the traffic movement as government police quietly watched. Will Nepal's Maoists accept election results? - 09 April 08
They are a 20, 000 strong force who waged war for over a decade.
Nepal's Maoists are now committed, at least on paper to laying down their arms and seeking power instead through the ballot box.
The Maoist guns may be silent for now, but if the result of this vote is not to their liking, many Nepalese fear a bloody end to this experiment with democracy.
