Unitus Microfinance Microcredit Introduction Video

Microfinance products such as savings accounts, microcredit loans (usually $50 to $150), and health insurance empower the poor to lift themselves out of poverty. Through microfinance, they can secure better nutrition, education, healthcare and housing for their families. Microfinance has helped millions in developing countries raise their standards of living and protect themselves from economic setbacks.
Unitus is a global microfinance accelerator that acts as a social venture capital investor for the microfinance industry. Unitus identifies the highest-potential microfinance institutions (MFIs) in developing countries and helps accelerate their growth through capital investments and capacity-building consulting, thus empowering them to help exponentially more poor people worldwide. In doing so, Unitus aims to demonstrate that MFIs can be run as profitable, large-scale, poverty-focused businesses with links to local capital markets. As of October 2005, Unitus had seven MFI partners worldwide serving more than 504,000 poor clients.

Senegal Ecovillage Microfinance Fund
www.sem-fund.org The SEM Fund, or the Senegal Ecovillage Microfinance Fund, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to alleviating poverty by providing low-interest business loans aimed at strengthening the business skills and livelihoods of highly motivated microentrepreneurs that are excluded from the commercial banking system. Currently, our focus is the thirty-three poverty-stricken villages in the West African nation of Senegal, which are a part of the Global Ecovillage Network, Senegal (GENSEN).
The SEM Fund's mission is to help break the cycle of poverty afflicting the people of developing countries. We are based on the premise that effective and sustainable development can be achieved by opening up opportunities for poor people to control their own economic futures. We do not provide handouts that create dependencies.
We believe that in order to generate the greatest impact, as much of our funding as possible should be used for the communities in which we work. Therefore, donations to The SEM Fund go towards expanding our reach throughout Senegal and providing loans which once repaid will be loaned out again, thus creating a revolving loan fund.

Microfinance - Does it really work?
Governments from Brazil to Bosnia have launched massive microfinance programs, and commercial banks like ABN AMRO, HSBC and Citicorp are rushing down-market, which could increase access to credit for the poor. Some 500 million poor worldwide have reportedly benefited from $6 billion in micro-loans, which supporters want to ramp up to $300 billion. But its critics say there is no solid evidence that microfinance makes a difference, either in developing the economy or reducing poverty.
