Dedham, Flatford Mill and Constable Country
On Saturday we went to beautiful Dedham and Flatford Mill, which is around ten miles from home. Nearby to Flatford Mill is Willy Lott's Cottage where Constable painted his most famous painting, The Haywain. I have spliced it in to the video so that you can see how it looks now, 180 years later.

Dedham is at the heart of 'Constable Country' - the area of England where Constable lived and painted. Constable went to school in the village in the Grammar School (now the 'Old Grammar School' and 'Well House'), walking along by the River Stour from East Bergholt each morning to school. Many of Constable's paintings feature Dedham.
The Hay Wain is an oil on canvas painting by John Constable. It was finished in 1821 and shows a hay wain near Flatford Mill on the River Stour at Flatford, Suffolk.
Flatford Mill was owned by Constable's father, and the house on the left side belonged to a neighbour, Willy Lott (a tenant farmer), who was said to have been born in the house and never to have left it for more than four days in his lifetime. Willy Lott's Cottage has survived to this day practically unaltered, but none of the original trees in the painting exist today. The water level is also higher, as that area of East Anglia has sunk into the sea by one foot (30 cm) since Constable's time.
Willy Lott's Cottage is a 16th-century cottage in Flatford, East Bergholt, Suffolk, England that features in John Constable's painting, The Hay Wain.
The property is Grade I listed and located in the heart of Dedham Vale, a typically English rural landscape.
The cottage is located just downstream from Flatford Mill which, along with neighbouring Valley Farm and Bridge Cottage, are leased to the Field Studies Council, a group uses them as locations for arts-based courses.
