Child trafficking
Trafficking strips children of their right to grow up in a safe family environment, to enjoy the joys of childhood, and gain in education and health. It undermines efforts to prevent gender discrimination and makes children vulnerable to exploitative life situations.
The reasons for trafficking are many, including sexual exploitation, cheap labour, marriage and adoption. Situations of emergencies, unemployment, migration, and superstitious beliefs like that which hold having sex with a virgin as a sure cure for HIV/AIDS all fuel trafficking.
Children caught in the trafficking net are mentally distraught. Depression and suicidal tendencies are common. There is increasing fear of the link between HIV/AIDS and trafficking becoming stronger, leading to further stigmatisation and discrimination of the victims.

Child labour
Everyday, millions of children in India wake up to face a day of hard labour. Their sweat puts food on the plates of their families.
These children have never seen the inside of a textbook or written with a pencil. They start work young, and continue to work till adulthood, losing precious years. Malnourishment, physical and psychological violence by coworkers and employers and unspeakable mental trauma become unnecessary evils in their lives.

Child marriage
It's very difficult to imagine the life of a child forced to marry very young. The fear of living with a stranger, giving birth, and taking on huge responsibilities can be overwhelming, many times incapacitating.
In India, it's illegal for a girl or boy to marry before the age of 18 and 21 respectively. But a majority of Indians live in villages where customs, caste and rituals -- not legalities -- influence decisions.
Some communities feel child marriage is the best way to prevent sexual exploitation of the girl. Ironically, in many cases, there is danger of such harassment only after they are married.

Quality of learning
When families live a hand-to-mouth existence, they think twice about sending their child to school. When they do, sadly, not all children are given good education.
The present school system assesses a child's knowledge through examinations. Substandard teaching, poor infrastructure, and an education system that is not child-friendly prevent children from asking questions or thinking creatively.
Gender discrimination means girls from poor families are more likely to drop out of school compared to boys. True, more children are entering schools. Also true, many of them are not given quality education.
