Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen has broken her silence and said that she is confident of returning back to Kolkata soon. Speaking to NDTV three days after being shunted out of West Bengal, the writer said she was touched by the support of the people and that the last two days had been emotionally traumatic.

Pourquoi les autorités indiennes ont-elles décidé de vous enfermer, vous, et pas les islamistes qui vous menaçaient ? Le gouvernement indien ne veut pas perdre de voix, même quand elles viennent de criminels. Les autorités n'ont rien fait contre eux, mais contre moi. Pour les satisfaire, c'est moi qu'ils ont arrêtée et placée en résidence surveillée. Or, émettre une fatwa contre quelqu'un est illégal en Inde. Pire, à Hyderâbâd, en septembre 2007, j'ai été physiquement attaquée par des islamistes. Mais personne n'a été inquiété par la justice. Pourtant, en 1994, lorsque vous avez dû quitter le Bangladesh, l'Inde vous avait défendue... Je suis une écrivain laïque. Quand j'ai été attaquée au Bangladesh, en 1994, beaucoup d'écrivains, d'hommes politiques, de partis politiques indiens ont pris position en ma faveur. Mais en 2008, quand la même chose est arrivée en Inde, personne, ou très peu, ne m'a défendue. Parce qu'auÂjourd'hui, en Inde, la défense des minorités semble supplanter la défense de la laïcité. Or, c'est une erreur, le fondamentalisme reste du fondamentalisme même s'il provient d'une minorité opprimée, comme celle des musulmans en Inde. L'Inde, qui se veut une grande démocratie, devrait défendre des voix comme la mienne. Pour moi, les droits de l'homme ne sont pas compatibles avec les religions. L'islam, comme les autres religions, doit accepter la critique. On me considère comme un écrivain anti-islam, mais ce n'est pas le cas, je critique toutes les religions.
