Neighbourhood Vigilantes - Cuba
January 2007
Castro may be seriously ill but his autocratic regime shows no signs of relaxing its grip on power. A network of neighbourhood spies ensures 'dangerous subversives' are kept in check.
There are more than 135,000 Committees for the Defence of the Revolution (CDRs) in Cuba. There main purpose is to ensure that nothing -- or no one -- puts the achievements of the Revolution at risk. "With the help of the CDRs, we know who is who and who does what", explains Ruben Perez, Deputy Manager of the CDRs. Committees can hand out warnings to citizens deemed acting inappropriately. Those who fail to change their behaviour are then imprisoned for up to four years. People can also be imprisoned for moving from one town to another without a visa. When released, political prisoners are constantly monitored. "I am like a prisoner in my own neighbourhood", complains one former prisoner. "I'm afraid to visit anyone because I don't like to complicate anyone's life by my presence". Few people expect life to change soon. "I don't have any illusions about Fidel Castro's death leading to major democratic changes", states one man. "The generation that created this system will still be in power".

Tommee and The Neighbourhood
ABOUT TOMMEE:
Indonesian born artist, Tommee has gathered a wild following from the release of his debut album, "No Added Sugar" thanks to his trademark Kecapi (a twenty-string instrument crafted Indonesia) and urban jungle groove vibes. An incredible voice that echoes remnants of legendary luminaries such as Bob Marley, Tommee draws great music from his idols while exploring a unique music style all of his own.
Tommee's soulful vein music exploded onto the scene in early 2004. The ever so familiar foot tapping rhythms of Tommee's soulful jam leaves audiences spell bound wherever he goes. His charismatic presence, his combination of style and love of ethnic musical instruments encouraged an edgy, unique sound where it is described as roots, blues, folk, reggae, gypsy, world music -- all of which does not encompass one entity but welcomes all.
He landed on our shores 20 years ago, calling Sydney home. His determination to continue his musical journey by spreading his soulful jams throughout Australia led him to secure a role as keyboardist with the infamous contemporary jazz ensemble, Kalabash. This gave Tommee the opportunity o extensively tour Australia, playing in major festivals and support acts such as The Wailers, Ziggy Marley, UB40 etc.
Tommee has since spent time working on his original compositions, creating more musical harmonies and rhythmic melodies with the Kecapi. Apart from working on this album, his skill on the Kecapi has seen Tommee performing as guest musician with other prolific artists such as Bob Brozman and Harry Manx.
Tommee was born in the heart of the jungle, in a village called Bima in Sumbawa Island on the Eastern side of Indonesian archipelago. His musical journey began in his mother's kitchen, where he amused himself with an orchestra of instruments including the pots and pans and plates and buckets.
At the tender age of 12, his music teacher spotted his natural talent and star quality, introducing him to drums. It was at this point Tommee's inspiration for music escalated where he mastered traditional and ethnic string and percussion instruments including the guitar, piano, Kecapi, Gambo and Kenong.
Tommee is a Blue Pie artist and is available at all leading digital retailers on the planet. You can search for Tommee under his name "Tommee". For more information on Blue Pie and Tommee please go to the following websites.

WHAT THE MEDIA ARE SAYING:
"No Added Sugar" straddles several genres, including reggae, classical, blues and folk. It works best when the fine band settle into toetappin' grooves."
~Peter Holmes, The Sunday Telegraph~
"No Added Sugar" as the name suggests, naturally sweet enough. The band enthuses their tracks with love, colour and soul that comes together to unite the planet with the soulful sounds. Their music moves through genres, anchoring itself in urban jungle groove, making the sojourn in to roots reggae then a quick joy ride to funk, soul, blues, then a stop over to sample Latin and Afro beats."
~Mandy Nolan, The Echo ~
"Harry Manx's exotic instrumentation mushroomed with the addition of "Tommee", an Indonesian who played an extraordinary koto-like instrument called the Kecapi, as well as some of the most lyrical and impassioned guitar of the festival."
~John Shand, The Sydney Morning Herald~
