Gustavo Dudamel conducts the world-renowned Simon BolÃvar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela. In 2007, the Los Angeles Philharmonic appointed Dudamel as the new Musical Director, beginning in 2009.
For several years now, Gustavo Dudamel and the young musicians of the Venezuelan youth orchestra Simon BolÃvar have been causing a furor on the international music scene. More than anything else, it is they who have earned the Venezuelan orchestra system respect around the world: 30 years ago the conductor, composer and economist Jose Antonio Abreu had the vision of combining social work and classical music. Abreu's goal was to tear down elitist structures in music education and make music a fundamental right of all the country's children.

Ovation TV | The Swell Season: Live from the Artists Den
Built in 1906 as a shelter for young wayward or orphaned girls, the Good Shepherd Center Chapel in Seattle provided a new sort of haven for two hundred Artists Den guests on a crisp autumn night. Now a Historic Seattle landmark and performance space, the intimate chapel is framed by high wooden arches, which were lit by candlelight while the latest incarnation of the Swell Season -- led by Academy Award winners, Glen Hansard and backed by Marketa Irglova on piano and two of Hansard's band mates from the Frames on bass and violin -- gave a special performance of their melodic, original songs, several of which were featured in the Fox Searchlight film Once.

Ovation TV | Patty Griffin: Live from the Artists Den
AT THE ANGEL ORENSANZ FOUNDATION IN NEW YORK
Patty Griffin's new album, Children Running Through, was released on a bitterly cold winter day in New York City that turned into an even colder night, with temperatures dropping to 9 degrees Fahrenheit as devoted fans huddled together outside the Orensanz Foundation for the Arts for a chance to see Griffin perform songs from the album for the first time. Inside, the historic building's neo-gothic arches were lit with the warm glow of candlelight as Griffin stepped into the packed room to play a private Artists Den concert, celebrating her record's release and offering a sneak preview of her extensive spring tour. Griffin's crystal-clear voice filled the room with newly penned songs (a handwritten lyrics sheet sat perched on the piano when she took a break from her guitar to play it) as well as Griffin classics, accompanied by new band members and longtime players alike. A special treat on some songs was the addition of legendary keyboardist Ian McLagan (Small Faces, The Rolling Stones) -- who appeared for this night only -- and a 5-piece string section. At the end of the evening, the lucky audience walked back out into the biting cold braced with the warmth of an unforgettable night.
