Mittelbau Dora concentration camp
The Mittelbau Dora concentration camp was set up in mines which had been converted to an underground fuel depot for the Wehrmacht in 1936 following the successful raid on Peenemuende by the RAF in August 1943.
Prisoners were sent from Buchenwald, followed by those that had survived the RAF raid on the rocket manufacturing sites on the Baltic coast.
The decision to move underground was designed for protection against bombing raids although the weapons being produced were initially rockets which as it turned out had little strategic value.
Had the Nazis concentrated on jet engines instead then the bombing of Germany - the number one reason for the Allied victory in the opinion of many historians - would have come to a halt.
Around one prisoner in three transported here, died in the 20 months or so of the camp's existence.
Mittelbau Dora was a pet project of Albert Speer who got away with twenty years imprisonment at Nuremburg although the Russian judge opted for the gallows.
This shows what the camp looks like today.
The way to the camp is well signposted from the town of Nordhausen.
I would also like to suggest anyone interested also sees this site:

This site was made to commemorate the memory of the first US serviceman to reach Mittelbau Dora.
Please also see my website and blogs which contain information about where this was filmed and some of the background:
