Perception - The reality beyond matter
Since so many facts get updated these days, I one day found myself wondering... What is "reality"? Is matter all that is real?
That might seem like a silly question given how we use our senses to interact with 'reality' everyday, but I have since arrived at ideas which I am comfortable with regarding these questions (although Im still curious). So heres some questions to play with - play nicely :-)
If I had to point to where my idea or concept of reality is maintained, Id be pointing to my head - how about you?
Is all this environmental information just vibrational energies which are presented to our body and then decoded to form a perception in the brain according to our programs and patterns? ie: Do we subconsciously 'read' or filter this data then build an experience that seems real?
Can I get outside of my experience to prove anything is fact or real, or is reality bound to ones experience like the fabric to the shirt?
What of the realities I have when I dream, - my body still responds as if they are real, so what is reality?
If I am not the cause (creator) of my experience; the director of my focus of attention on some level whether awake or asleep, am I controlled by something else?
And if I am completely controlled by something other than me, what then is the purpose of my life?
I wish you all - many pleasant realities.
Pete.

Shpongle - The Dorset Perception
Shpongle are Simon Posford (aka Hallucinogen) and Raja Ram (one half of The Infinity Project and founder of the indo-prog/raga rock group of the 60's/70's Quintessence). Their sound is a mix of mainly eastern ethnic samples and western contemporary psychedelic synth music.
Posford is responsible for the synth and studio work while Raja Ram contributes with flute arrangements and visionary input.
The Dorset Perception is a tribute to a book, "The Doors of Perception" by Aldous Huxley, which you can read here:

Visual Perception with Deep Learning
Google Tech Talks
April, 9 2008
ABSTRACT
A long-term goal of Machine Learning research is to solve highy
complex "intelligent" tasks, such as visual perception auditory
perception, and language understanding. To reach that goal, the ML
community must solve two problems: the Deep Learning Problem, and the
Partition Function Problem.
There is considerable theoretical and empirical evidence that complex
tasks, such as invariant object recognition in vision, require "deep"
architectures, composed of multiple layers of trainable non-linear
modules. The Deep Learning Problem is related to the difficulty of
training such deep architectures.
Several methods have recently been proposed to train (or pre-train)
deep architectures in an unsupervised fashion. Each layer of the deep
architecture is composed of an encoder which computes a feature vector
from the input, and a decoder which reconstructs the input from the
features. A large number of such layers can be stacked and trained
sequentially, thereby learning a deep hierarchy of features with
increasing levels of abstraction. The training of each layer can be
seen as shaping an energy landscape with low valleys around the
training samples and high plateaus everywhere else. Forming these
high plateaus constitute the so-called Partition Function problem.
A particular class of methods for deep energy-based unsupervised
learning will be described that solves the Partition Function problem
by imposing sparsity constraints on the features. The method can learn
multiple levels of sparse and overcomplete representations of
data. When applied to natural image patches, the method produces
hierarchies of filters similar to those found in the mammalian visual
cortex.
An application to category-level object recognition with invariance to
pose and illumination will be described (with a live demo). Another
application to vision-based navigation for off-road mobile robots will
be described (with videos). The system autonomously learns to
discriminate obstacles from traversable areas at long range.

The Perception Of Consciousness
See the full presentation at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8AXmJdmzfM
Peter Russell studied mathematics and theoretical physics at the University of Cambridge (UK), supervised for a while by Stephen Hawking. Then, as he became increasingly fascinated by the nature of consciousness, he changed to experimental psychology. He won several scholarships for his work at Cambridge and graduated with a first class honors degree. He then went India, where he studied meditation and Eastern philosophy, and on his return took up research into the psychophysiology of meditation at the University of Bristol. He also has a post-graduate degree from Cambridge in computer science, and conducted some of the early work on 3-D displays and what is now known as "virtual reality".
Peter Russell was one of the first people to introduce human potential seminars into the corporate field, and for twenty years ran programs for senior management on creativity, learning methods, stress management, personal development, and sustainability. Clients have included IBM, Apple, Digital, American Express, Barclays Bank, Swedish Telecom, ICI, Shell Oil and British Petroleum.
His principal interest is the inner challenges presented by the times we are passing through. He has written several books in this area, including Meditation, The Brian Book, The Global Brain Awakens The Creative Manager, and Waking Up in Time. Peter's latest book, From Science to God: A Physicist's Journey into the Mystery of Consciousness, explores how a deeper understanding of the nature of consciousness leads to a new synthesis of scientific and spiritual worldviews.
Regarded by many as a contemporary visionary, and one of the clearest thinkers on spirituality in modern times, Peter has been a keynote speaker at many international conferences in North and South America, Europe, and Japan. His multi-image shows and videos, The Global Brain and The White Hole in Time have won praise and awards from around the world. In 1993 the environmental magazine Buzzworm voted Peter Russell "Eco-Philosopher Extraordinaire" of the year.
Peter is a fellow of the Institute of Noetic Sciences, The World Business Academy, The Findhorn Foundation, and The Heartland Institute, and is an Honorary Member of The Club of Budapest.
