Ammonium Perchlorate Rocket Propellant Test
WWW.PYROSECRETS.COM
This was a test of some Ammonium Perchlorate Rocket propellant I made using PBAN resin, Ammonium Perchlorate, and copper oxide as a catalyst and colorant.
The engine was made using a 1" diameter by 1.25" long fuel grain, loaded into 1" Schedule 40 PVC pipe, with a bentonite/grog nozzle/header. The core extended only about .3" into the actual grain, since the pressure from a fully cored grain would have surely blown the case. The total power of the engine was about that of an upper E-class engine, but with a very long burn time. Before this one, I had about 3 engines CATO until I lowered the Ammonium perchlorate percentage for a slower burning propellant.

Ammonium Perchlorate, roughly half a gram
Around a half gram of Ammonium Perchlorate, nice little puff of smoke. Of course, this is nothing compared to a bigger amount, and being uncompressed, not also the fact that I'm indoors. Wouldn't wanna blow up the place now would we? By the way, I obtained the chemical from a rather large firework rocket.

Potassium Perchlorate Bomb
Remote detonation of a homemade potassium perchlorate .... uh... "firecracker"
we used a long coaxial cable with BNC connectors to a homemade detonation safety switch that sent battery power to a light bulb filament to light a fuse. The 'homeless man' is a medicine bottle, wrapped vertically with high tensile wire, then covered in a whole roll of electrical tape. Some of the colored stars extracted from the rockets were added to the mix as a filler and for good measure.
DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS! THIS VIDEO WAS CREATED SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO! DO *NOT* GRIND UP BOTTLE ROCKETS, ITS VERY DANGEROUS AND COULD FLASH UP WITHOUT WARNING, CAUSING 3RD DEGREE BURNS, OR EXPLODE AND KILL YOU!!! "Mixtures containing chlorates are notoriously sensitive to shock, friction, and temperature change. Mixtures of chlorates with sulfur or sulfides, and especially mixtures with phosphorous are prone to spontaneous combustion or detonation." (ref: John Donner, 1999 ISBN: 1581600194) You probably WILL NOT know what kind of rocket fuel mixture is used, so you have NO idea how sensitive it will be to shock and grinding!
... We were lucky not to kill ourselves, burn our hands off, or burn the house down that we ground the stuff up in...

Perchlorate
Perchlorate
A chemical found in rocket fuel, explosives, fireworks and air bags.
Washington Post Article:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/21/AR2008092102352.html?hpid=topnews
Blogger Rick Attig at the Oregonian succinctly explains why the EPA has suddenly decided to back down and drop its efforts to address perchlorate contamination:
Its obvious whats going on here. The administration wants nothing to do with a cleanup that could cost hundreds of millions of dollars or more. Nor does the Pentagon want to expose its friendly defense contractors to the costs of cleaning up the contamination they are responsible for leaving behind to seep into drinking water in at least 35 states and the District of Columbia.
Attig also points out that the Bush administration and the Pentagon are preparing to fix the science to justify not regulating perchlorate by setting the maximum contamination level at 15 times the figure the EPA suggested in 2002.
