PNE performer wows crowds with upside-down art creations
Painter brings stars to life in under five minutes
Nicole Tomlinson
Vancouver Sun
Friday, August 22, 2008
VANCOUVER - Jon Hicks figures he has painted Elvis Presley's face more than 1,000 times. Upside down.
This year, Hicks is doing his act at the Pacific National Exhibition's Street Star Plaza outside the Agrodome.
The street performer uses four colours to transform a six-foot by four-foot black canvas into a portrait of a famous person, head facing down, in less than five minutes.
"I paint and then I spin the canvas and step aside," Hicks said, arms mimicking the motion. "It highlights the icon."
He times each brush stroke to music that's "appropriate" for the subject, such as a tune from a Clint Eastwood film while he's painting the Hollywood actor and director.
"I'm not sick of it yet because of the music I use in the show," said the 45-year-old Englishman, who has been painting anywhere from 12 to 15 icons for almost a decade. "It's quite uplifting."
Hicks began his outdoor career "pavement drawing" after graduating from arts college in the U.K. during the '80s.
"I realized I didn't like working in a studio. I liked showing off," he said.
Inspired by Rolf Harris -- an Australian entertainer who became well-known in Britain for completing paintings in the time it took to play a song -- Hicks began practising upside-down portraits in 1999.
He said the performance has come a long way since his first show in 2000, which "was rubbish" because he realized the secret was to think of his creations as "interlocking shapes" coming together to form an image.
This is Hicks's first time at the PNE and his fourth time in Canada; he first performed on Canadian soil in Halifax in 2001.
"Here there are nice audiences, I'm enjoying myself," he said when asked about his impression of Canadians.
"People aren't as helpful in London."
Over the years, Hicks has painted singers such as Frank Sinatra, Freddy Mercury and Mick Jagger.
But you have to stay popular to make Hicks's lineup -- he's dropped rap artist Eminem from his repertoire because "he's kind of disappeared and gotten fat."
Hicks's show runs three times a day until the end of the PNE.
