La Atenas de Pericles

Cuando en el año 460 antes de Cristo Pericles se hace con el poder, su primer objetivo será hacer de Atenas la ciudad más importante de toda la Hélade.Para ello pondrá en marcha un ambicioso plan de renovación arquitectónica de la ciudad, que tiene en la Acrópolis su punto culminante. La Acrópolis se levanta en una colina situada en el centro del valle de Atenas, como una fortaleza natural semicircular. En este santuario se concentran los principales edificios de culto.
El acceso a la Acrópolis se realiza a través de los Propileos, levantados por Mnesikles por orden de Pericles entre los años 437 y 431 a.C. Dos terrazas superpuestas, divididas por un corredor transversal con columnas jónicas, daban lugar a cuatro estancias rectangulares.
El templo de Atenea Nike fue construido a partir del año 421 a.C. Calícrates fue el encargado de los diseños, resultando un pequeño edificio de orden jónico de gran belleza.
Iktinos y Calícrates son los responsables del Partenón, el templo dedicado a la diosa Atenea Partenos, la protectora de la ciudad. Se trata de un templo dórico, con ocho columnas en sus frentes principales y todo su perímetro rodeado también con dos filas de columnas. Realizado en mármol blanco del Pentélico, se construyó entre los años 448 y 438 antes de Cristo. En su decoración trabajó el mejor escultor del momento, Fidias, diseñando las metopas, el friso de las Panateneas y los frontones, creando buena parte de las mejores muestras del arte clásico.
El Erecteion fue construido por Mnesikles entre 421 y 406 a.C. Se encuentra en el lado septentrional de la Acrópolis y estaba consagrado a Atenea y Poseidón. El edificio, de estilo jónico, se adapta perfectamente a la orografía natural de la colina. En su lado meridional se alza el Pórtico de las Cariatides. Seis jóvenes vistiendo el peplo dórico sostienen el entablamento con un capitel en forma de cesto, constituyendo una rítmica composición atribuida a un discípulo de Fidias.
En el Museo de la Acrópolis se encuentran las piezas halladas desde mediados del siglo XIX, durante las excavaciones y las obras de restauración llevadas a cabo en la colina sagrada. PERICLES REDUX

Pericles Pantazis
Périclès Pantazis (Athens, 1849-1884) was a major Impressionist Greek painter of the 19th century who gained a great reputation as an artist initially in Belgium. He studied painting at the Athens School of fine Arts with Nikiphoros Lytras as his teacher. He continued his studies in Munich, Marseille and Paris. In 1873 with a reference letter from Manet he moved to Brussels. In Belgium Pantazis became a member of an anti-academic artistic group called Circle de la pâte (meaning the circle of colour). Initially he worked as a home decorator for Guillaum Vogels but later he was dedicated to painting as he became increasingly known for his talent. He died before he turned 35 years old from chronic tuberculosis.
Ο Περικλής Πανταζής (Αθήνα, 1849-1884) ήταν ένας σημαντικός Έλληνας ζωγράφος του 19ου αιώνα, ιμπρεσιονιστής, που κέρδισε μεγάλη φήμη ως καλλιτέχνης, αρχικά στο Βέλγιο. Σπούδασε στη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών της Αθήνας με δάσκαλο τον Νικηφόρο Λύτρα. Συνέχισε τις σπουδές του στο Μόναχο, τη Μασσαλία και το Παρίσι. Το 1873 με μια συστατική επιστολή του Manet πήγε στις Βρυξέλλες. Στο Βέλγιο ο Πανταζής έγινε μέλος μιας αντι-ακαδημαϊκής καλλιτεχνικής ομάδας αποκαλούμενης κύκλος "de la pâte" (που σημαίνει "ο κύκλος του χρώματος"). Αρχικά εργάστηκε ως διακοσμητής για τον Guillaum Vogels αλλά αργότερα αφιερώθηκε στη ζωγραφική καθώς γινόταν όλο και περισσότερο γνωστός για το ταλέντο του. Πέθανε προτού να γίνει 35 ετών, από χρόνια φυματίωση.
