Catalan Perpignan or « Fidelissima Vila de Perpinyà » : these are the official names of the city.
They refer to the history, the identity and the heritage, but they are also the expression of a cultural and geographical reality which makes this city wealthy and unique.
Catalan , because Perpignan - capital of French Catalonia from the middle of the 10th century to the 17th century despite a few interruptions - was a piece of a Catalan principality linked to the Aragon Kingdom. Perpignan is undoubtedly one of the centres of the Catalan , Roman and Mediterranean culture - which stands out thanks to its language , its traditions , its artistic expressions and the commitment to its values .
The title « Fidelissima » was given to Perpignan in 1474 by the King of Aragon and Earl of Barcelona - Jean the Second - to commemorate the resistance of the people during the annexation of Roussillon by Louis the Eleventh. Since then it has been added to the Arms of the City.
