Old Russian Romance "Lebedinaya pesn'", (1/2) Natalya Tamara
„I am so yearning ! If you only could understand my soul, so deeply sensitive..."
These are first lines of a famous Russian romance -- "Swan-Song" (Lebedinaya pesn'); a legendary piece of the kind, created around 1900 by one of the most extravagant Russian artists of that Era -- Mary Puare. (1864 -- 'after 1918' as sources present).
Her life may be compared with a kaleidoscope. Richness and poverty. Stage successes and love turbulences. A lady of high society and a prisoner of Petersburg jails. And the object of public sensations -- constant imaginary pregnancies.
She was the first to present her own production, "Swan-Song", which resulted in a success and reaction of the public being close to the madness; the performer was offered by her admirers with dozens of artificial swans - all sizes, all materials...-
The Swan-Song is also said to be the last interpretation of great Varya Panina; legend says that it was sung by that Gypsy-singer on her death-bed.
Лебединая песнь
Слова и музыка Марии Пуаре (Mary Puare)
Present recording of the romance was made by an interesting Russian singer of the first decade of 20th century -- Natalia Tamara, Sankt Peterburg, Grammophon, 1912.
Thanks for friendly support to Igor Loshchilov.

Old Russian Romance "Lebedinaya pesn'", (2/2) E. Schischkina
Elena Egorovna Schischkina (1864 - 1942) -- famous singer of a Gipsy group (tsyganskoe khorovoe tabornoe penie -- in Russian), a soloist. She acted and sang on restaurant platforms as well as in theatres, being a member of a well-known Sanct-Peterburg gipsy quartet Schischkin's (Elena, Nina - singing; Andrey, Alexander - guitars).
Nina (Schischkina-Tsur-Millen) was very famous too, she was a girlfriend of a poet Nikolaj Goumilev and composed romances to his lyrics. After the revolution 1917, Elena Egorovna worked in Petrograd "Theatre for the young spectator" under direction of Alexander Brjantsev (Petrogradskij Teatr Junogo Zritelja pod upravleniem A. Brjanceva, TJuZ). She was a teacher in singing of a well-known singer of Soviet time, Strongilla Irtlach (of Turkish origin).
It may be interesting that Schischkina actually was not able to read and write, and did not know notes or sheet music. Lived long and her history embraced what might be called: Sanct-Peterburg - Petersburg - Petrograd - Leningrad.
I suspect that "Lebedinaya pesn'" might have been recorded by her in mid 30's when she was around 70.
My thanks to Igor Loshchilov for kind support.
