On 14 November 2007 the French Academy of Fine Arts brought together its members for their annual meeting.
The Speaker of the French Academy :
" Now the prize-winners. The Georges Bizet prize in music composition is awarded to Mr Ramon Lazkano."

Ramon Lazkano is being rewarded for the work he has composed these last five years. His present-day work focuses on the Laboratory of Chalks.
Ramon Lazkano :
"I call it a laboratory because it deals with a set of works for which the issue at stake is "how", how to act and what to do with the material we have and the material we find"
Pascal Ianco (Promotion representative, Les Editions Le Chant du Monde, publisher of Ramon Lazkano):
"We have already produced two Chant du Monde CD's with his work as well as two monographic ones, and with Jean-Paul Dessy we are planning on doing a third one dedicated to the Laboratory of Chalks, that cycle of short works, each one characterized by its own changing set of rules. We are aware that contemporary music aims at a rather restricted and well-informed audience. Ramon Lazkano's work lies within this framework. It is however so powerful, its physical presence is so intense, that I think that even those who are not specialists, those who are not used to this kind of language, can develop a great feeling for it."
Ramon Lazkano :
"I have discovered that we can possibly go off in search of it, try to go off, without anticipating. With regard to time in the laboratory, there are two ways of tackling the processing of it: it may be either time as being sort of interrupted, or the idea of a continuous flow or flux, that is to say how to manage musically the possibility of some material that is ever-changing, ever-evolving".

"We do explore a certain musical world in less time than it would take us to explore a long contemporary music work; yet, this world does remain a musical world ruled by its own laws and its own dynamics"

"What strikes me most in him is his musical intuition, things unheard of, literally, really, things we are sure we have never heard anywhere before, which can be extremely poetic, but also sometimes very strange, even a little out of touch"

Ramon Lazkano :
"These are periods of time, extracts of time; there is not one finiteness. The hypothetical unfolding of this sound passage is taking place elsewhere elsewhere. A little bit like our lives actually! All right, it is true that we live, we were born, we die, but how do we find our place, our meaning here?"
Gérard Pesson :
"The specificity of Ramon Lazkano, the greatness of his art, I would say, is exactly this, the fact that he is an incredibly curious and sharp person, very self-demanding and elevated in his way of regarding the world. I would say he has a consistent mind in that he is profoundly responsible when he gets to writing".
