Marine tourism in Phang-Nga Bay: Koh Tapu & Panyee
To listen or download mini-video, go to http://news.prd.go.th/news_detail.php?newsid=215997 Special Report for Andaman News TV11 (VHF dial) & KPP Cable TV channel 1 at 8.30am + maybe FM90.5 Radio Thailand 6pm, both broadcast to Phang Nga, Krabi & Phuket provinces, possibly FM108 Mazz Radio 7.30pm in Phuket & perhaps Phuket Cable TV Channel 1 at 7, 10.30 or 11pm, Friday 18 January 2008 & http://news.prd.go.th Marine tourism in the Andaman region is very active this month, of January as the ocean is usually calm with no rain. This includes the Phang-Nga Bay, which is home to many breath taking natural wonders like the, Tham Lod, Koh Ping Gan & Koh Tapu or James Bonds Islands and the small Muslim fishing village of Koh Panyee. We made a journey from Surakul pier in Kasom village where boat operators provide life jackets to passengers for safety before going out regardless of the weather or whether there is likely to be a storm or not, as they just want passengers to enjoy the scenic routes at sea without worrying about accidents. Among popular water activities here are canoeing, snorkeling, swimming or just posing at the world renowned Nil island or Koh Thapu internationally known as James Bond Island due to it being the location for the famous James Bond film 'The Man with a Golden Gun'. According to park officials at present over 1,000 people visit the island daily, 80% of whom are foreign visitors. Just at the end of last year, the National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department introduced new Marine National Park Fees for visitors. For example 200 Baht for foreign adults and 100 baht for a child under 14 years of age while a child under 3 years old is exempted from the fee. The destinations are popular with all markets: European, Asian like Japanese, and Thais. This family from Australia also visited the island for their second time, while sailing their own yacht and anchored it nearby then came up to explore the beauty of the James Bond island. Touring around Phang-Nga Bay most vistiors usually do not miss the opportunity to make a stop at the 200 year old Muslim fishing village of Ko Panyee where they can appreciate the unique lifestyle of locals who blend themselves well with tourism development and are always open and welcoming for new visitors. Panyee Island, actually is a fishing village, built on an area which can be flooded by the sea, so their houses are leveraged to the highest level over the sea. This village is located outside the national park. Panyee people are original fishing people, living among the shallow fish farms by using floating bag-nets, cockle farming, and fish cages. The island mosque and even local school are becoming other places of interest for visitors. A small number of Home Stay accommodations are also offered on the island for those who wish linger longer to learn more of the local almost unique life style here.

Phang Nga national park, Thailand
Phang Nga national park, Thailand. February 2001. Phang Nga (Thai: พังงา) is one of the southern provinces (changwat) of Thailand, on the shore to the Andaman Sea. Neighboring provinces are (from north clockwise) Ranong, Surat Thani and Krabi. To the south is the Phuket province, but without land boundary to Phang Nga. The province is located on the west side of the Malay Peninsula, and includes many islands of the Phang Nga Bay. The most famous one is the so-called James Bond Island, a needle formed limestone rock in the sea, which featured in the 1974 movie The Man with the Golden Gun. The Ao Phang-Nga (Phang-Nga Bay) National Park was established in 1981 to protect the many fascinating islands. The Similan Islands, one of Thailand's main diving destinations, are also part of Phang Nga province. In the 18th century there were three cities of comparable status in the area - Takuapa, Takuatung and Phang Nga. The city Phang Nga was probably created in 1809 during the reign of King Rama II, during one of the wars with neighboring Burma. The city Thalang on Phuket island was razed, and the citizens were ordered to relocate to Phang Nga. In order to strengthen the defense in the strategic important area in 1840 Phang Nga became a province, and Takuatung was reduced in status as a district. In 1931 Takuapa was also incorporated into the province. On December 26, 2004 Phang Nga was one of the places hit hard by a tsunami following the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. The province was probably the hardest hit in Thailand. Thousands died, including Bhumi Jensen, the grandson of the King of Thailand.

Tsunami affected community Ban Nam Kem Phang Nga
(put sound on max to hear properly or go to http://news.prd.go.th/news_detail.php?newsid=215738 where sound is OK) Special Report for Andaman News TV11 (VHF dial) 8.30am + maybe FM90.5 Radio Thailand 6pm, both broadcast to Phang Nga, Krabi & Phuket provinces, FM108 Mazz Radio 7.30pm in Phuket & Phuket Cable TV Channel 1 at 7, 10.30 or 11pm, Friday 21 December 2007 & http://news.prd.go.th "All volunteers, are you there? Please check the radio. Calling for No. 1, 16. It's time to check the radio. This is No. 1, 16 from Ban Namkem, Soi Tsunami. The situation here is normal." The communication by mobile radio, which became portable equipment for each community safety volunteer at the small fishing village of Ban Namkem in Phang Nga, is a vital task the members place importance on, apart from their daily activity to earn a living. Every time when heading out to the open sea, Samran Ruck-kaew never forgot to take the communication radio with him. It is vital tool to inform others in case of any emergencies. The 2004 Tsunami has raised awareness for the hard-hit village of Ban Namkem in Thakuapa of Phang-Nga province. This led to the establishment of 'the Ban Namkem Community Volunteers to keep guard on any hazard to the community. ' The group comprise 40 members. Apart from assisting any community activities, one of their main tasks is to disseminate warning information received from authorities or report any hazard they see to the community, as well as to handle any situation, like assisting in evacuation, in case they need to. "Evacuation and warnings are our main responsibility. We are well prepared 24 hours a day. First we have to announce to inform the community that an earthquake has occurred. Please do not panic, but keep listening. In case of an actual warning of Tsunami we have to immediately announce and evacuate people to safer ground. We also have to guard against any burglaries." Despite today's complete recovery of the community which includes people's livelihood and careers, every time there is a strong earthquake or rumor, the villagers evacuate. It is an experience they learnt from the massive devastation three years ago. "We ran the simulation situation exercise once, and two natural evacuations when villagers and foreign workers cooperated well." The natural disaster taught the local community here to learn to live safely with nature. The early warning system, installed by the authorities, is one part of the protection for the community, but the dedicated work of these local volunteers, comfort the villagers to sleep soundly at night knowing that their own community members are taking turns guarding their own village for a safer community. "I'm proud to be part of the voluntary force for the community, to be able to assist my community members. I'm happy to do so. Some say to me are you crazy to do the work without pay, but I said I'm proud to contribute to my community."
