The idea of phonics is that instead of "ay", "bee", "see", you learn the sounds of English and then the letters that they correspond to. The idea being that this makes reading a whole lot easier.
Hence this song, which is a version of the abc song but using the sounds rather than names of the letters.

We use this song in our classes to teach older kids the sounds the letters make. If you teach it in conjunction with the ASL hand shapes then the child learns to recognize the hand shape and the sound that goes with it. You can then start putting the letters together to form words.
