"Heart of the Night" is from Poco's 13th and most successful album, "Legend," released in November 1978. The singles "Heart of the Night" (lead vocals by Paul Cotton) and "Crazy Love" (with Rusty Young singing lead) went on to become the group's two biggest hits to date.
On the "Legend" album, the band merged its distinct Country Rock sound with a more mainstream, commercially-applauded Soft Rock flavor - a formula which was well-received by audiences in the band's tenth year. The songs are now embraced as Seventies classics by many who enjoyed growing up in that era.
The "Legend" album cover was designed by then-aspiring actor and sometimes graphic artist, the late comedian Phil Hartman of Saturday Night Live fame.

Poco, which experienced perennial personnel lineup changes over the years, is also known for former members Randy Meisner and Timothy B. Schmit, who went on to join the ranks of another California-based Country Rock band, The Eagles. Schmit left Poco for The Eagles just before work on "Legend" (he last appeared on the album "Indian Summer").
Poco was formed in 1968 by Rusty Young with former members of 60's Rock group Buffalo Springfield - Jim Messina and Richie Furay - after Neil Young and Stephen Stills exited for other projects. Early on, Randy Meisner beat out Timothy B. Schmit in an audition to play bass & provide vocals for the fledgling group. But when Meisner split Poco for The Eagles, Schmit replaced him. History would repeat itself when Schmit again replaced Meisner when he left The Eagles - just before the group released its last album prior to their breakup, which occurred at the height of their sold-out concert tours & album sales.
