Bob Relf - Blowing My Mind To Pieces
Just about the most seminal quintessential Northern Soul record ever. The notorious Simon Soussan used to say this record epitomised Northern Soul. Bob Relf also recorded as Bobby Garrett and was one half of Bob And Earl, along with Jackie Lee. The original duo were Bobby Byrd and Earl Nelson who later became Jackie Lee. They had both been members of The Hollywood Flames, a prolific doo-wop group in Los Angeles, California whose major hit was "Buzz Buzz Buzz" in 1958, on which Nelson sang lead. By 1957, Byrd had started a parallel solo career, writing and recording for contractual reasons as Bobby Day. He wrote and recorded the original version of "Little Bitty Pretty One", and had a hit of his own with "Rockin' Robin" (1958). In 1960, Day / Byrd and Nelson began recording together as Bob & Earl, on the Class record label. However, these releases had relatively little success, and Day / Byrd restarted his solo career. Nelson then recruited a second "Bob", Bobby Relf, who also used the stage names of Bobby Garrett and Bobby Valentino. Relf had already led several Los Angeles based acts in his career, including the Laurels, the Upfronts, and Valentino and the Lovers. The latter two groups also featured the then pianist and bass singer, Barry White. This duo of Relf and Nelson recorded several singles for different labels, before recording "Harlem Shuffle" in 1963. The song was written by Relf and Nelson, arranged by Barry White, and produced by Fred Smith, and when released on the Marc label became a modest hit on the R&B chart. Its vocal interplay directly influenced later duos such as Sam and Dave. However, its main success came as late as 1969, when it was re-released in the UK and became a Top Ten hit there. Reportedly, George Harrison called it his favourite record of all time. By that time, Nelson had achieved further success as a solo artist under the alias of Jackie Lee, with "The Duck", a hit dance record released in 1965. (Jackie was Nelson's wife's name and Lee his own middle name). When "Harlem Shuffle" became successful on reissue, Nelson and Relf reunited as Bob & Earl to tour. However, the duo split up finally in the early 1970s. For the last ten years, Bob Relf has been in ill health, yet we still managed to film this in 1999, the only time he has ever performed this legendary song, which was released in 1968 on his own label, Transamerican, which he co-owned with actor Aki Aleong.

BOBBY RELF - Blowing My Mind To Pieces
"BLOWING MY MIND TO PIECES" - Released 1968. BOBBY RELF, singer and songwriter, was born on January 10, 1937. He died on November 20, 2007, aged 70. Bobby was a Los Angeles soul singer and song-writer whose hits, notably Harlem Shuffle, were successful in the Northern Soul clubs. As half of the soul music duo Bob & Earl, Bobby Relf was an almost permanent fixture in the lower reaches of the UK pop charts during the late 1960s. Their record, Harlem Shuffle, originally released in the US in 1963, came out in the UK a year later and became a club favourite which sold steadily without breaking into the Top 20. But demand for the record grew and when it was re-released in 1969 it reached No 7 in the UK charts. Behind Relfs belated success lay a long and varied history as a vocal group singer in Los Angeles, where he was born in 1937. Robert Relf was attending Fremont High School in 1954 when he got together with his fellow pupils Sam Jackson, Ted Brown and Ronald Brown to form the Laurels. They got the chance to record the following year with the ballad Yours Alone for the LA-based Flair label. The group next recorded as backing singers for the R&B star Jesse Belvin before performing a similar task for the blues star Peppermint Harris. The Laurels had the opportunity to record by themselves again for the RCA X label and rounded off a busy year with discs on the Combo and Cash labels. The latter — an operatic-like ballad called Our Love — was described by the music writer Jim Dawson as one of Relfs best recordings — a strange, lugubrious performance that sounds like nothing else. Relf went solo for his next recording, Little Fool, in 1956. After it failed to find success, he continued to sing and spent short stints with groups such as the Crescendoes, the Upfronts, the Hollywood Flames and Bobby Day and the Satellites.

(Yardbirds) Keith Relf/Jim McCarty - Shining Where The Sun Has Been
Following the demise of the Yardbirds, Keith Relf and Jim McCarty went on to do some recordings under the name "Together" before evolving into "Renaissance"... This track, however, was recorded during Summer '68, just under the name 'Relf/McCarty' and was taken from a rare acetate disc in order to be released on the Yardbirds double CD "Little Games Sessions & More"... (...hence, the bad quality of the audio track!)
PS: I dedicate this clip to Carolina! ;-)

(Yardbirds) Keith Relf/Jim McCarty - Together Now (Audio)
Yet another pastoral song from the Relf/McCarty combo when Keith and Jim were recording under the name 'Together' back in June '68 just before they both left the Yardbirds in order to form Renaissance with Jane Relf (among others) soon after...
Ex-Yardbird Paul Samwell-Smith is (once again) the producer here.
