I was experimenting some rotoscoping when I was at the Art Institute of Seattle. The animation was reference from Rodney Mullens part in "Rubbish Heap". 2 weeks and 8 Heinikens later, this is what I got.

Rotoscope Cartoon Shader 1.0 Test
I captured some early scenes from Doom 3 and applied the recently released "Rotoscope Cartoon Shader 1.0" mod and compared it with the original footage from the game. Also used a Virtual Dub filter called "MSU Cartoonizer" for another version of the cartoon effect. Links for download are shown at the end of the video. As of 8/20/06 there is a newer version of the Rotoscope mod (1.1) which has been released for Quake 4 and Prey, but not quite yet for Doom 3.

GORK Sci-Fi trailer Rotoscope animation
Here's the history of how I made it. It's a short film I made in collage back in the 80s. Started in 1985 and finished in 1989.. Real short huh. It was shot live action 16mm film and then I edited it and Rotoscoped the whole thing. Roto the serious Old School way. Using a "downshooter" camera system. No like those new flash rotoscope commercials . However, all this didn't take 4 years, it was the cel painting that took so long.. I had very little help.. anyway.. This was a Student film from my days at CalArts (California Institute of the Arts) in Valencia, California, USA.
Here's an interesting tid-bit I forgot to add. I was taught how to rotoscope by Michael Patterson. He was an instructor at CalArts at the time. He was also a freelance artist who was in the middle of making the music Video by the group A-ha called 'Take On Me'. yeah the mother of Rotoscope films.
I actually got my first industry job back in 1985 through Michael. Someone offered him a roto job and he turned it down (he said they were paying pennies) and referred them to CalArts. Someone had seen my roto tests on a the Lin-Lamb video animation system and asked me if I wanted to do it.. I, of course, said yes. It was a Tela-credit commercial.. I'll post it up at some point.. I think I have it on 3/4" tape.. ughh.
Hope you like Gork .. I'd love to make this into a series or movie someday soon.
I forgot to mention that the 3D was done using Maya in about 2002. The original 3D, which can be seen on the 16mm film, was done in the 80s using CubiComps 3D software.. it's quite a long story... If there is enough interest I'll post up footage of the making of Gork.
