SV Tutorial: Vegas Pro Lightsaber Effect, no After Effects
I'M NO LONGER RESPONDING TO QUESTIONS. If you have any, I've answered the most common questions below.
This is Sony Vegas Pro 6.0. Any later version (as long as it's Pro) will also work.
The music is "Summer Inspiration" and "Infatuation," both by Flying Hands Production Music.
Create a lightsaber in Vegas without After Effects, VisionLab, LS Maker, or anything else, for those of you who don't want to buy a $900 program, or download a crappy free one.
VEGAS PRO IS NOT FREE, so stop asking me where to download it. I made this under the assumption that anyone who would bother to watch it would already have Vegas. If you want Vegas Pro, you can buy it for about $500 (either that, or download it illegally from a Torrent or something, I don't care. If you want a torrent, do a damn Google search). This was made so that people who already own it wouldn't have to spend another thousand dollars on After Effects just to do lightsabers.
People keep asking me why their Vegas doesn't have the "Mask" thing. It's because I'm using Vegas PROFESSIONAL. If you're using Movie Studio or Platinum, you won't have it, and you won't be able to do it. You need the professional version.
WHY NOT USE LS MAKER? Because it sucks, that's why. It has a shitty interface and doesn't support HD, and I always hear people complaining about rendering and format problems, and you have to render it out just to re-import it into your editing software anyway.
FOR MULTIPLE LIGHTSABERS, you have to repeat the process for the other lightsaber, so if it takes two tracks to make one, it takes four tracks to make two, or six to make three, etc. Yes, it's a pain in the ass, but that's what you have to do.
You have to rotoscope to make lightsabers, it the only effective way. It isn't any different in any other program.
TO MAKE THE CLASH EFFECT, the easiest way is to use an elliptical color gradient from the Media Generators. Pick the black and white one, change the white to yellow and the black to transparent, then use the Event Pan/Crop to put it where you need it.
IF YOU'RE HAVING TROUBLE DRAWING THE LINES, you're probably using it like a line tool. It works more like a pen tool. You just click once to make a point, then you click again somewhere else and it generates the line in-between the two points.
If you try to click-and-drag like you would with a line tool, it just curves the line.

I came up with a slightly different method, now that I'm learning more about it. I came up with a way to make the lightsabers look a lot better. I'll make a new tutorial when I'm done with my experiments.
I originally assumed that the same thing can be done with Final Cut or Adobe Premiere, or any other major editing system, but SteveBocaranda says Final Cut can't do it, so I can only guess whether or not Premiere can.
