Shadowy Narcissus in Ireland (Part 1 of 3)
From a Celtic land of immigrants to another: from Galiza in NW Spain to Ireland. As the sublime Galician poet Rosalía de Castro wrote, the wives and children of the men who migrated and never came back became, in effect, widows and orphans of living people. The music here is by Galician Celtic folk band Fuxan os ventos (May - ill - winds flee) in a song about immigration, "Iste vaise" (This One Goes Away), and there is also a live rendition by The Corrs of their hit "Only When I Sleep." We share common dreams. * Muros milkmaids in Carnota mountain image by Nebraskan photographer Ruth M. Anderson, taken in 1924. * Dedicated to Carmen San Luis Fernández

Shadowy Narcissus at the Louvre (Part 1)
In the year 2005, I travelled from Boiro in Galiza, Spain to France looking for Goya's spirit. In Paris, I had the luck of spending three or four hours at the Louvre. Intense bliss. I was kindly granted permission to take photographs, but, experiencing as I was a sort of Stendhal's syndrome, I only took 11. They show, among the many stunning masterpieces, some of the works that fascinated me the most. Maybe you can help to identify some of them. Thank you and happy 2008! 1. Baron Pierre Narcisse Guerin - Cephalus and Aurora 2. 3. Sandro Botticelli - Venus And The Three Graces Presenting Gifts To A Young Woman (detail) 4. 5. 6. Leonardo da Vinci - Mona Lisa (such a sad countenance!) Background music in my room: Franco Battiato's "L'ombra della luce" (Love you, F.B.) * Ola. Teño devoción polas semellanzas razoables. Buscade neste vídeo persoas "cun aire" ás escritoras galegas Rosa Aneiros e Luisa Castro.

Shadowy Narcissus: Outside Santiago Cathedral
Outside views of Santiago de Compostela's Saint James Cathedral in Galiza, NW Spain. There is so much to see. People from all over come to this shrine, where Jesus's Apostle James is said to be buried. For believers or unbelievers, there is a magnificent array of artistic masterpieces to be enjoyed, the work of centuries. 1. Door of local, half-forgotten poet Aurelio Aguirre's house. Aurelio was an excellent poet who died, in a mysterious way at Santo Amaro beach in A Coruña, when he was only 25. The high heels you can hear may symbolize all his loves: Felisa, Efigenia, Pepita, etc. 2. Silversmiths' Square, with Fountain of Horses and Clock Tower 3. The Tree of Knowledge - here, before a glass pane covered it, a young undecided student would stand with his or her back against it and direct an arm to it without looking, to see which branch of knowledge he or she would pursue in the future 4. Obradoiro Square, with Council building on the left 5. Apostle James Cathedral on the right 6. Sexy visitor sunbathing 7. Ferdinand and Isabella hotel in front 8. Two stone "guardians" by the main gate 9. A glimpse of nearby Alameda park, with echoes of a CIG workers' union demonstration 10. That visitor again * Quero dedicar este vídeo con agarimo ao teólogo galeguista Xosé Chao Rego.

Shadowy Narcissus in hometown Araño
People, sights and sounds from the town where I was born: O Araño, in Rianxo, A Coruña, NW Spain. This morning, on Thursday the 7th, February 2008, I drove to the town and I visited some favorite places. First, I stopped at a tiny bridge, over the local river Te, in Foxacos. I saw, going on the way through Buía - another section of this town - three eager little dogs and a big wandering German shepherd. Then, I got to the Saint John chapel in A Ermida. There, as soon as I stepped out of the car, I met, for the first time, a man who turned out to be a friend of my dad's, from when both were young sailors looking for work in Rotterdam. This friendly man, Manuel, is the river guardian. He invited me to film the saints inside the chapel. After that, I headed for a place that is magical for me: the Campo da Ponte, Field of the Bridge, where I used to play soccer with my friends, always trying to skip the stone cross that stands almost in the middle of a rather round field! This fine cross (now obviously in need of restoration)was drawn, most probably on the spot, by Galician hero Castelao, for his book about the crosses found in Ireland, Brittany and Galiza. Finally, two workers, one from the neighboring town of Asados and the other one from Araño, agreed to appear on this video which I hope you will enjoy. * Ola! Se alguén do Araño ten unha foto do noso mestre Don Manuel, podería dicirmo para sacarlle unha foto a esa imaxe? É para un vídeo. Era un bo home e quero lembralo aquí en YouTube. Graciñas, amigos do Araño

Shadowy Narcissus: Roxy Music - Take A Chance With Me, Tara
Tribute to Roxy Music, one of the most Romantic of bands. This song, written by Bryan Ferry and Phil Manzanera, is my favorite by them, followed by "Same Old Scene," "Both Ends Burning," "Out Of The Blue," and "While My Heart Is Still Beating." Roxy Music has recorded some glorious albums over the years, works made with a controlled passion which feels almost unbearably bittersweet at times for the listener. Very often, the songs are really sexy and correspond well with the glamorous image of the amazing girls that have adorned their image. We don't know about the love lives of the wondrously talented Bryan Ferry, Phil Manzanera, Andy Mackay, Brian Eno, and the assorted magnificent musicians who accompanied them - a special mention for drummer Paul Thompson and bassists Alan Spenner, Neil Jason and Gary Tibbs - but they have inspired some crazy, torrid, heartfelt and riveting music. 1. Vilar beach, near Ribeira in Galiza, NW Spain 2. Sandokan and Marianne (Kabir Bedi and Carole André) 3. Brunette modelling for Olivier Strelli 4. Blonde model, for LoMonaco 5. My first driver's license, 1983, age 17 6. Billie Holiday 7. Blonde model 8. Jennifer Lopez, from Doo magazine 9. Self-portrait, after a breakup 10. Model for a Clarins ad 11. Kate Winslet, for movie based on Esther Freud's extraordinary "Hideous Kinky" novel 12. Model for Mujer de hoy magazine 13. José Saramago, outstanding Portuguese writer, author of "Blindness" 14. Emmanuelle Seigner, in fantastic "The Diving Bell And The Butterfly" movie 15. "Sleepy" model for Clarins ad 16. Postcard from the 80s 17. Vilar beach again, with old companion the moon, some fishing ships and the magical Corrubedo lighthouse in the distance. I forgot to mention that Roxy Music is also the most elegant group ever, and this virtue appears on Andy Mackay's brief jewel "Tara" from the same "Avalon" album. 1. Roxy Music's "Take A Chance With Me" lyrics 2. Roxy Music 1982 "Avalon" album credits 3. Bryan Ferry 4. Roxy Music onstage 5. Astounding blonde 6. Lovely girl, modelling Versace and Jean Muir 7. Shadowy Narcissus in Vilar beach * Message to Mr. Moore: I admire your cello work on the album . Please excuse me for encircling your name, all in good humor. *Emmanuelle: if you happen to read this ... you are one of the most attractive screen presences I've ever seen. I admire your acting on the telephone scene. I hope you star in many movies.

Shadowy Narcissus in Teenage Pictureland
A trip to the past by way of my old portfolio. I hope that you like it. I did most of this when I was living with my parents in the Ironbound section of Newark, New Jersey, U.S.A., from 1977 to 1985. Some works are more recent. 1. Vampirella - after Pepe González 2. "New wave girl" 3. Asterix and Obelix vs. the Goths - after Albert Uderzo 4. Yellow demon 5. Jimmy Carter, Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, et al at war - after Moebius 6. (Funny trio from a French comic) 7. Warrior - after Alex Nino 8. Knight in armor 9. "Self-portrait with face-paint" 10. My father Manuel's foot 11. After Albretch Dürer's portrait of his mother 12. After Paul Gauguin 13. Superman - after Neal Adams 14. Vampirella - after Pepe González 15. Model from a Perry Ellis ad on the March 3rd, 1985 issue of the New York Times Magazine 16. Model from a Ralph Lauren ad 17. Zora nude - after Fernando Fernández, featured in Heavy Metal magazine 18. Model from a German Silkience shampoo ad in Burda magazine 19. Heart-shaped kissing, from a Counterparts missy bottoms pants ad * I remember my Seton Hall Prep Art teacher Randy Schweitzer. A big hug, by the way, to all my fellow students from the Class of '84, to Monsignor Kelly and to all the fine teachers we had. * The model in a yellow dress unintentionally came out resembling Monaco's Princess Caroline * A fond remembrance of the comics-magazines I loved: Epic, Heavy Metal, Creepy, Vampirella, Rambla, The Savage Sword of Conan, + Marvel and DC comics such as Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Hulk, Wonder Woman, Iron Man, etc. * Also love: Rudy Nebres, Frank Frazetta, Vicente Segrelles, Esteban Maroto, José Ortiz, Luis García, Richard Corben, my fellow Galician José Luis García López, and many other fabulous illustrators * Graciñas a Amaro polo seu colgante gótico e por coñecer por el a primeira canción * The Ralph Lauren model reminds me of Isa Rebollido, from Boiro band Síndrome de Estocolmo * I'm in a very nostalgic mood, and I want to send all my love to my three Oliver Street School teachers Janice Bottino, Don Daborn and Paul Mustacchio. * Greetings to my Seton Hall Prep classmate Matthew Colacurto, who has found me through this video. Best wishes, Matt! * Music: Atreyu's "Two Become One," Jean-Michel Jarre's "Touch To Remember" and Beyoncé featuring Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott's "Crazy Feelings"

Shadowy Narcissus: my great-grandmother MamáCarmen in As Miráns
Homage to my great-grandmother Carmen Agrelo Vilanova. This is a walk through the stone village where she lived all her life: As Miráns. The fields where she worked so hard, the river Te running nearby, the fresh streams and the type of birds she would hear. You can see two workers, one from Araño and the other one from Asados, at the Campo da Ponte, Field of the Bridge, with the stone cross that Galician hero Castelao once drew. Then you can see the façade of my friend Martín's house and a typical grain cellar made of stone in 1885, the year in which my idol the poet Rosalía died. After that, my relative Moncho shows the strange rooftop terrace of the house where he lives, the same house in which MamáCarmen lived with her daughter María, my grandma, and her granddaughters Carmucha, my aunt who lives in the Basque city of Vitoria-Gasteiz, and Concha, my mom. Finally, you can hear the voice of my friend Willy, who says that he's leaving (for the U.S.A.) on February 14th. * When MamáCarmen died many people were crying hard because they called her "the friend of the poor," since she was unbelievably generous to all the needy that came to her door when there was great poverty and hunger in the land.

Shadowy Narcissus: Is Everyone Lonely?
A trip to my life with some people I love. Bryan Ferry (and Sting agrees) is said to have remarked: "We are always alone and we'll never understand." This is an autobiography that is interspersed with images of persons, living and gone, that I admire and love. Were they, or are they, basically lonely individuals? 1. Abandoned factory in San Finx mines, Lousame, A Coruña, NW Spain 2. months old, held in the air by my mom Concha in the house where I was born in O Araño, Rianxo 3. Hans Christian Andersen in 1865 4. age 4 5. photographer Ruth M. Anderson, from Nebraska, on a field in Vimianzo, A Coruña, 1924 6. age 6 7. Ruth M. Anderson at the museum yard in Pontevedra, 1925 8. age 8 9. Kate Winslet in Premiere magazine, photo by Robert Krumann 10. age 11, with my grandmother María Pérez Agrelo - the person that is gone that I love the most. Her husband went to Argentina as an immigrant just before their second child - my mom - was born. She never saw him again and remained, as my favorite poet Rosalía would say, "a widow of the living" 11. Henry James - wasn't he lonelier for being homosexual in his times? 12. age 13, in the States, school picture. I love this shot because in it I have the same expression as Kate Winslet on my favorite scene in Sense And Sensibility: playing Marianne she weeps in amazement when she suddenly discovers that Emma Thompson's Elinor also has a lonely, needy heart 13. Nazim Hikmet - I Come And Stand At Every Door - with wife Münewer 14.age 18, self-portrait in my room in Newark, and next is the 15.view I had from that room 16. Eusebio Lorenzo Baleirón, outstanding Galician poet from Dodro who suffered a tragic death, from cancer, at age 27. He looks a bit like ... 17. Bruce Springsteen, whose album The River contains two favorites of mine: "Point Blank" and the title track 18. face of Jesus, lonely on the cross, by Galician sculptor Gregorio Fernández, probably one of the best sculptors ever, though he isn't yet acknowledged as such 19. a bull strikes young matador Jesulín de Ubrique. Unlike my lonesome idol Hemingway, I hate bullfighting, but I guess that the bullfighter must feel really lonely 20. Sting, around 1980, during a Police concert. He wrote the immortal "So Lonely" 21. age 36, on the beach in Palmeira 22. Anton Chekhov, the best short-story writer ever 23. age 42, March 8th, 2008. By a bizarre coincidence, a problem with the video transfer shows me at an old age (if I get there), like a sort of Dorian Grey. * Is life a play? A beautiful tragicomedy? * Thank you for watching. I realize that the video is very long. Music: Fizzarum's "Microphorus" and Biosphere's "Poa alpina" * This video (like the novel I am writing: The House Of Common Good) is dedicated to my beloved grandmother María Pérez Agrelo, "MamáMaría" (Araño, 1906- Vitoria-Gasteiz, 1982)

Shadowy Narcissus: self-portrait
This video is a brother to the previous one. It shows the Axeitos Neolithic dolmen or cromlech (erected in the 4th millennium B.C.) in Oleiros, near Ribeira in Galiza, NW Spain. There was a beautiful horse near the monument, but I was in a hurry and I couldn't film it properly. At 17", the shadow comes in. In the last seconds, a glimpse of a person who goes crazy in a battle between shyness and expansiveness. Music: magical intro to the song "Which Way To Turn", by Bryan Ferry and Brian Eno (slightly shadowed by Buena Vista Social Club's "Qué bueno baila usted" in the horse sequence). * Thank you for watching and, if that is the case, for following the Shadowy Narcissus series.
