Round 1 Game 1 Pistons vs Sixers 2008 Playoffs
4-20-2008
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- The Detroit Pistons were hanging out at the scorer's table as if it were a preseason game, joking around with a former teammate as he enjoyed a drink and nachos in the front row.
Philadelphia made them pay for it.
Andre Miller scored 20 points, and Willie Green had a career playoff-high 17, helping the 76ers stun Detroit 90-86 on Sunday in Game 1 of their first-round series.
Sixers forward Reggie Evans smiled when told the Pistons were shooting the breeze with Flip Murray during breaks in the game.
"That's good," Evans said.
Rasheed Wallace took the blame for the loss -- despite having 24 points, nine rebounds and matching a franchise playoff record with seven blocks -- but didn't think blowing a big lead had anything to do with talking to Murray.
"That's my man," Wallace explained.
The Eastern Conference's second-seeded team was expected to beat the seventh-seeded Sixers by double digits and did lead by 15 midway through the third quarter.
But Philadelphia refused to follow the script.
After the Sixers trailed 62-47, Green made two baskets during a 10-0 run that sparked a comeback.
"That kind of swung the momentum," Miller said.
Miller gave Philadelphia a lead midway through the fourth quarter for the first time since late in the first.
After Chauncey Billups missed three of four free throws and a layup in two-plus minutes late in the game, he made two from the line to pull the Pistons within one with 45 seconds left.
Detroit's Jason Maxiell drew a charge on the ensuing possession, giving the home team a chance to avoid an upset.
The Pistons set up a play that created an open shot for Tayshaun Prince, but his jumper was short. After Andre Iguodala made one of two free throws with 11 seconds left, Wallace missed a shot near the basket that would have tied it at 88.
"I'm going to put this one me," Wallace said. "There's no excuses.
"The last bunny, that was a bucket I should've made. I'm going to take this one on the chin."
Iguodala made two free throws with seven seconds left to seal the victory.
"I'm pretty sure we shocked a lot of people," Evans said.
Both teams will get two days off before Detroit plays host to Game 2 on Wednesday night.
"We've got to fire back on Wednesday," Pistons coach Flip Saunders said. "It's a must-win game now."
The Pistons, who have advanced to five consecutive conference finals, hadn't lost a Game 1 in the first round since 2003 against Orlando.
Iguodala finished with a career playoff-high 16 points after a slow start, Evans had a career playoff-high 11 points and 14 rebounds and Thaddeus Young scored 10 for the Sixers in his postseason debut.
Billups scored 14, Richard Hamilton had 13 points on 5-of-17 shooting, Maxiell contributed 12 points and a career playoff-high 11 rebounds and Prince added 12.
The Sixers started and closed strong despite being the least-experienced team in the playoffs, matching up with a team that trails only the San Antonio Spurs in combined playoff games.
"There's no question that we grew up in the second half," Philadelphia coach Maurice Cheeks said.
Philadelphia led by six points early in the game, but Detroit scored the last 11 points of the first quarter and held the Sixers scoreless for five-plus minutes. That drought spilled into the second and included a cold stretch in which they made only 2 of 21 shots.
Wallace's 3-pointer midway through the second quarter capped a 23-6 run and gave the Pistons an 11-point lead.
The Sixers scored the first eight points of the second half, and Detroit missed its first six shots before going on an 11-2 run to lead by 15.
The Pistons, notorious for their inconsistent effort, proved the cushion wasn't large enough.
"That's Detroit," Iguodala said. "They turn it on and turn it off.
"We just kept fighting the whole way."

Sixers - Celtics 95-90 [Iguodala 28pts vs Garnett 18pts]
BOSTON, March 24, 2008 (AP) -- The Philadelphia 76ers are closing in on a playoff berth, and now they have a record they can be proud of, too.
Andre Iguodala scored 10 straight points during a 19-0 run that brought Philadelphia back from a double-digit, fourth-quarter deficit Monday night, and the 76ers beat the Boston Celtics 95-90 to move above .500 for the first time this season.
"It shows how hard we've worked to get back,'' said Iguodala, who finished with 28 points. "But I think we still have to have that mentality like we're a team that's still under .500 and still fighting. It's not over yet. We've gotten to a point where we want to be, which is over .500, but we still don't have an 'X' by our name'' to signify a playoff berth.
Eddie House's 3-pointer gave Boston an 80-69 lead with 8:20 to play, but the Celtics didn't score again until Pierce hit a free throw with 1:38 left. By that time, the Sixers were on their way to their 18th win in 23 tries, improving their record to 36-35 and moving them into postseason contention.
"They are making a good run at the playoffs over the last month and a half,'' Celtics forward Paul Pierce said. "They will be a dangerous team in the playoffs.''
The Sixers won just five of their first 18 games and sat 18-30 seven weeks ago. But with Monday's win, they pulled ahead of Toronto and into sixth place in the Eastern Conference, a game behind fifth-place Washington.
Beating the top team in the NBA also gave them a jolt of confidence.
"It's huge when you come in here and win a game like this against Boston, it does a lot for us,'' coach Maurice Cheeks said. "We still have a long way to go. This is just one step to try and get to where we want to be.''
Andre Miller scored 20, Thaddeus Young had 16 points and nine rebounds, and Samuel Dalembert grabbed 12 boards for Philadelphia.
Kevin Garnett scored 18, Leon Powe had 16 and Ray Allen scored 14 for Boston, which lost its second straight after winning 14 out of 15. The Celtics long ago clinched a playoff berth, and they played as if it didn't matter down the stretch.
"These games are crucial to us, too,'' Garnett said. "We are trying to establish something, and a rhythm going into the playoffs. So these are big games for us, too, just as it is for all the other teams coming in here.''
Boston never trailed in the first quarter and led for all but a few minutes of the second. But it was tied at 66 near the end of the third before House hit a 3-pointer, and Glen Davis made a couple of free throws to give the Celtics a five-point lead after three.
House hit another 3 early in the fourth to make it 78-68, and he added a left-side jumper to give the Celtics an 80-69 lead with 8:20 left. The Sixers scored the next 19 points - five by Young, four by Louis Williams and a steal and emphatic breakaway dunk by Iguodala to tie it.
Iguodala finished off another fast break to give the Sixers an 82-80 lead, then hit one of two free throws, another steal-and-dunk, another free throw and a fallaway jumper to make it 88-80.
Notes: Powe had 12 points and five rebounds off the bench in the first half for the Celtics. Pierce was 3-for-4 from 3-point range. ... The first half ended 52-48 after a controversial goaltending call on Garnett on Reggie Evans' shot from the lane. Celtics coach Doc Rivers was livid. ... It was Boston's first game back since a five-game road trip in which it went 4-1, including the first sweep of the Texas Triangle - San Antonio, Houston and Dallas - since 1987. ... Three-hundred members of the U.S. military attended the game, compliments of fans who donated tickets, and were recognized with a standing ovation by the crowd and some of the players. One member of the U.S. Navy, Wymon J. Anderson, won $5,000 worth of vision correction surgery when he hit a free throw and a 3-pointer - blindfolded. ... James Posey missed the game to attend to a family matter, but is expected to be back for Wednesday's game against Phoenix.

LeBron James 27 points vs Iguodala 's Sixers April 14, 2008
PHILADELPHIA -- The 76ers saw Devin Brown's shot fall short, heard the buzzer and darted toward the locker room for an apparent victory celebration.
Game over? Not so fast.
Officials reviewed the final sequence for several minutes before deciding that 76ers center Samuel Dalembert fouled Brown with 0.2 seconds left and brought Philadelphia back to the court for the free throws.
Minutes after the game was seemingly over, Brown sank the pressure-packed free throws to lift the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 91-90 win over the Sixers on Monday night and clinch the fourth seed in the East.
"I heard a whistle," Brown said. "It was just a matter of the officials going back and changing the other official's opinion. But I did hear a whistle."
While the Sixers ran off the court, the refs huddled at midcourt to look at the replay. The Cavaliers stayed on the bench, with some peeking over and hoping to hear the decision.
Because field-goal attempts and fouls at the end of each quarter are reviewable, the refs took their time to make sure the right call was made. Dalembert was whistled for his sixth foul for making contact on Brown's drive to the hoop.
"There's contact on the play by Dalembert," referee Greg Willard told a pool reporter.
Sixers coach Maurice Cheeks argued with the refs and guard Andre Miller punted the ball in frustration.
The Sixers appeared to have won after Lou Williams hit a fadeaway jumper with 5.1 seconds left -- his second go-ahead basket in the final minute.
LeBron James had his shot blocked by Dalembert with 0.9 seconds left and the ball went straight to Brown. Brown went up for the basket and Dalembert came at him from his right side and the pair collided for the foul.
"You feel like you just got seriously slapped in the face," Sixers forward Andre Iguodala said. " It was like we had the 'W' and it was marked off."
James scored 27 points, Zydrunas Ilgauskas had 22 and the Cavaliers clinched home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
Brown smiled while he explained why he didn't think he'd get the foul call.
"Because I wear 33, not 23," he said, making a reference to James' number
The defending Eastern Conference champs and No. 4 seed Cavaliers get to start their title defense at home against the Washington Wizards. The Cavs and Wizards will play in the first round for the third straight year.
"This is what we set out to do," Cavs coach Mike Brown said. "We kind of took the long way, but we have it."
Brown said he planned to rest James and Ben Wallace on Wednesday night against Detroit. They'll join guard Sasha Pavlovic, who left with a sprained left ankle in the third quarter. Pavlovic, who averaged 7.5 points, was fouled on a baseline jumper and badly twisted his ankle on an awkward landing.
Miller scored 26 points and Williams had 21 for the struggling Sixers, who have lost all the momentum built during a torrid 11-4 March that shot them up the East standings. The Sixers (40-41) have lost three straight and dropped under .500 for the first time since they were 34-35 on March. 21.
Although the 76ers already secured a playoff spot, they were trying to stay out the seventh seed and avoid a first-round matchup with Detroit. No such luck. Philadelphia will get the Pistons and the Raptors will be the sixth seed and play Orlando.
The 76ers need a win Wednesday at Charlotte in the season finale to reach the .500 mark for the first time since 2004-05.
Williams scored 12 points in the fourth, hitting one big shot after another to rally the Sixers back from 12 down early in the quarter.
James fired an overhead pass to Ilgauskas, who easily spun around Dalembert for an uncontested layup and an 87-86 lead.
Williams and Brown exchanged layups, and the Sixers trailed by one. Then Williams buried a 19-footer from the right side and the Fan Appreciation Crowd erupted in cheers one final time in the regular season.
In a flash, the win was gone.
"To be a winner, then a loser, that's pretty tough," Cheeks said.
The 76ers retreated to the locker room where they watched the final minutes on TV. Miller had already started to remove his ankle braces.
"The referees made a decision, and we have to live with it," Miller said.
