The Day the Earth Stood Still is a 1951 science fiction film which tells the story of a humanoid alien who comes to Earth to warn its leaders not to take their conflicts into space, or they will face lethal consequences.
It stars Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal, Hugh Marlowe, Sam Jaffe, Billy Gray, Frances Bavier, and Lock Martin. Supporting cast includes journalist Drew Pearson. The movie was adapted by Edmund H. North from the story "Farewell to the Master" by Harry Bates, and directed by Robert Wise. The score was written by Bernard Herrmann and is notable for its use of a theremin.

Theatrical trailer for the 1951 Robert Wise-directed science-fiction classic, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL starring Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal and Hugh Marlowe. The gleaming robot Gort was played by stuntman Locke Martin. Bill Gray, perhaps best remebered as "Bud" on the popular FATHER KNOWS BEST television series with Robert Young and Jane Wyatt, played Neal's younger brother, Bobby Benson (--no relation to radio's BOBBY BENSON AND THE B-BAR-B RIDERS --). Sam Jaffe, ten years before assuming the mask of "Dr. Zorba" on TV's BEN CASEY with Vince Edwards, was cast as the Albert Einstein-like, "Professor Jacob Barnhardt."

The Day the Earth Stood Still" is 20th Century Fox's contemporary reinvention of its 1951 classic. Keanu Reeves portrays Klaatu, an alien whose arrival on our planet triggers a global upheaval. As governments and scientists race to unravel the mystery behind the visitor's appearance, a woman (Jennifer Connelly) and her young stepson get caught up in his mission -- and come to understand the ramifications of his being a self-described "friend to the Earth."
