Janine Benyus: 12 sustainable design ideas from nature
http://www.ted.com With 3.8 billion years of research and development on its side, nature has already solved problems that human designers and engineers still struggle with. In this inspiring talk, Janine Benyus provides fascinating examples of biomimicry -- the way humans mimic nature in the products we build and the systems we implement. And because the champion adapters in the natural world are, by definition, those that can survive without destroying the environment that sustains them, biomimicry can contribute to the long-term health of our planet.

Sustainable Living Roadshow
The Sustainable Living Roadshow is a caravan of educators, entertainers and activists coordinating cross country tours that empower communities and individuals to utilize sustainable strategies for a healthier planet. Visiting university campuses and community events across the United States, the tour encompasses a fleet of non-petroleum based renewable fuel vehicles. At each stop, the caravan sets up experiential learning-village's, featuring workshops, speakers, and entertainment. The Sustainable Living Roadshow is a new paradigm in entertainment, education and business. It is designed to celebrate practical solutions to global and environmental issues created by our modern energy and food systems. The intention of the tour is to introduce communities to sustainable living strategies, as well as validate and promote existing efforts. Through pre-coordination, the tour orchestrates opportunities that infuse these local ventures with new information and increased awareness at the surrounding campuses and communities. Supporting the ideal of bioregionalism, sustainable measures such as renewable energy, sustainable food systems, and community development are integrated at the local level. Collectively, workshops, entertainment and service projects empower youth and community members toward meaningful participation. The events also feature evening celebrations to broaden reach, share messages and encourage participation from a diverse array of audiences.

RNC Eve: Police Seize Sustainable Living Bus
More at http://www.theuptake.org. Delyla Wilson tours the country with her family in the "PermiBus," a mobile permaculture demonstration. The group is in the Twin Cities to teach people about sustainable living practices. On the evening of Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008 the bus was pulled over in what police eventually described as a routine traffic stop. After detaining the bus occupants, the police decided the bus was a commercial vehicle and impounded it for inspection, leaving the family and their guests stranded and homeless. The police allowed the Wilsons to remove their dogs and chickens, but were not allowed to retrieve their computers or any other belongings, including their daughter's shoes. This incident ended a day that saw multiple pre-RNC raids, which some legal observers believe is a coordinated pre-emptive effort by local and national law enforcement agencies to chill RNC protest action. Sustainable Development (Highlights)
In this pair of films, designed for schools, Excellent Development provide case studies of their conservation driven development and community-led approach in semi-arid Kenya through the lenses of sustainable farming and sustainable development. These films and the series of mini-films which explore each individual element of the charity's holistic approach to soil and water conservation offer a valuable insight into how communities can strengthen their long-term sustainability and make a positive grassroots contribution to fighting global climate change. The sustainable farming case study demonstrates how farmers address problems of soil erosion and water availability using terracing, sand dams & trees as a first step towards sustainable farming. The terracing and trees massively reduce soil erosion and keep more moisture in the farms while the sand dams harvest rain water allowing farmers to dedicate more time to their farms, try out new farming methods like zero-grazing and inter-cropping, diversify the range of their crops and work towards achieving food security and generating incomes. The sustainable Development case study explores why conservation of the environment has to be addressed first in order to make sustainable development possible in a semi-arid environment and looks at the impacts of soil and water conservation in terms of the improved availability of water and food, improvements in health, incomes and the positive contribution towards fighting climate change. The film also picks out the elements that make the development sustainable; the positive impact on the natural environment, Excellent Development's bottom-up approach and the use of appropriate technology.
