West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band / Smell Of Incense
"Smell Of Incense" is from the album "Part Two" ("Breaking Through") (October 1967) by the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band.
Dan Harris (guitar), Shaun Harris (bass), Ron Morgan (lead guitar), either Hal Blaine or Jimmy Gordon played drums, and Bob Markley (co-producer and inspirational leader). Guitarist Michael Lloyd was probably not with the band at this time.
Danny Harris recalled that there was a personality conflict between Lloyd and Markley: "I remember we were recording an album and there was an argument between Michael and Markley about who was going to walk out of the studio with the master tapes. It developed into a fistfight and Michael broke a guitar over Markley's back."
The WCPAEB was a somewhat strange, mysterious, and enigmatic band from L.A.
Despite this song's heady atmosphere, most of the band members never used drugs. Danny Harris: "We lived the legend without the drugs. Shaun (Harris) and I were Irish kids so we both drank a bit, but Michael (Lloyd) had a very strict upbringing so he never even drank and Shaun never smoked." Friend of the band, Kim Fowley: "Markley didn't drink either. All this madness was done without drink or drugs - not even dope. All of Babylon was raging about us but Pat Boone could have walked in and not been offended!"
Lyrics:
"She stood as still as the shadows of stones / She stood on the edge of my mind / I tried to push her away / I shut and locked the door / Her eyes grew large and asking / And the smell of incense filled her room..."
"She stood in the ever-present fullness of expectation / What happened to her childhood dreams? / The sidewalk smothers us tomorrow / And the smell of incense filled her room..."
