Is the ACLU a Liberal Organization?
Complete video at: http://fora.tv/2007/06/18/Anthony_Romero_In_Defense_of_America Anthony Romero, Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union, challenges mainstream characterizations of the ACLU as a strictly liberal organization. ----- "In Defense of America: Fighting A Different Kind of War, Without Becoming A Different Kind of Country" with Anthony Romero, Executive Director, American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). President Bush says the U.S. is fighting a "different kind of war," but does that mean it must become a different kind of country? Rather than justifying the usurpation of constitutional powers, this war demands that we stick to our core values more strongly than ever, says the ACLU. Romero shares examples from the legal war that he has been fighting at home. Anthony D. Romero is the Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union, the nation's premier defender of liberty and individual freedom. He took the helm of the 87-year-old organization just four days before the September 11, 2001 attacks. Shortly afterward, the ACLU launched its national Safe and Free campaign to protect basic freedoms during a time of crisis. Under Romero's leadership, the ACLU gained court victories on the Patriot Act filed landmark litigation on the torture and abuse of detainees in U.S. custody, and filed the first successful legal challenge to the Bush administration's illegal NSA spying program. Romero, an attorney with a history of public-interest activism, has presided over the most successful membership growth in the ACLU's history and more than doubled national staff and tripled the budget of the organization since he began his tenure. This unprecedented growth has allowed the ACLU to expand its nationwide litigation, lobbying and public education efforts, including new initiatives focused on racial justice, religious freedom, privacy, reproductive freedom and lesbian and gay rights.

From aclu.org/jarrar: Raed Jarrar is an Iraqi-born architect and human rights activist who was barred from boarding a JetBlue flight at John F. Kennedy Airport for wearing a t-shirt that read "We Will Not Be Silent" in English and Arabic. On August 9, 2007, the ACLU filed a lawsuit against JetBlue and a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) official charging that they illegally discriminated against Raed based solely on the message on his t-shirt and his ethnicity. Colbert Finds ACLU Mole at Fox News?
Judge Andrew Napolitano (mentioned as Ron Paul's running mate, see http://tinyurl.com/2csnvb) during his January 31 appearance on "The Colbert Report" provided much evidence he doesn't quite fit the Fox News Republican ethos as I show with the clips and commentary in this video. The entire segment of "The Colbert Report" from which I took the short clips in my video is available on the Comedy Central website at: http://www.comedycentral.com/motherload/index.jhtml?ml_video=149059 You can find out more about the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) at http://www.aclu.org

ACLU v. NSA arguments in the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals
From aclu.org/nsaspying: ACLU attorney Ann Beeson and clients in the ACLU v. NSA lawsuit after oral arguments at the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati. The ACLU argued the president broke the law by authorizing the National Security Agency to engage in warrantless eavesdropping of Americans' phone calls. While the Bush administration recently said that he has received new authority for surveillance from a secret intelligence court, the President has said that he still has the power to ignore the law when he wants to. The ACLU asked the Sixth Circuit to require the President to comply with the law. Ann Beeson, ACLU associate legal director and lead cousel in the case, is joined by ACLU clients and attorneys on the steps of the courthouse just after the oral arguments.

ACLU Fights Wiretapping Approved by Obama, McCain and Bush
When Pres. George W. Bush and Sen. Barack Obama BOTH agreed on unconstitutional amendments to the foreign intelligence surveillance act (FISA) last week, it raised questions about Obama's consistency on civil liberties and about how to best fight this assault on the Fourth Amendment and the right to privacy. I try to answer these questions with some clips from a Barack Obama news conference and from spokespeople for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) You can see the full July 1, 2008, Barack Obama news conference from which I took a short clip for my video at http://cbs2chicago.com/video/?id=46212@wbbm.dayport.com You can see ACLU Legislative Counsel Michelle Richardson's full June 21, 2008, appearance on C-SPAN's Washington Journal at http://www.c-spanarchives.org/library/index.php?main_page=product_video_info&products_id=205571-2 You can see more about the ACLU's fight against the FISA Amendments Act (including the ACLU video from which I took a short clip) at http://www.aclu.org/safefree/nsaspying/faachallenge.html And, you can see Sen. Barack Obama's full February 16, 2006, statement on the USA PATRIOT Act Reauthorization at http://obama.senate.gov/speech/060216-floor_statement_2/
